Excelent reference book

This book on solvent extraction is a very good one as far as the actual content goes. However, upon reading it and having students to use it as their sole aid for learning solvent extraction, it may be a little difficult to penetrate. The different authors, each excellent chemists and masters of solvent extraction, have written different chapters and it is sometimes difficult to see the red line of the subject. If the book is used as a reference book for people already understanding the principles of solvent extraction and they only want to have some detailed question answered, this book is very good. For the case of teaching solvent extraction, my recommendation is to use this book and complement it with detailed lectures to give students the chain of events and explanations that are needed upon learning a new subject.

That's what this book is - the Gold Standard for high end studio design and construction. After you have read Rod Gervais' excellent book and a couple of Alton Everest books, have waded through the Sayers forum and Gearslutz, then come to Philip Newell's book to help tie the loose ends together. Many many options are discussed and you are given some expectations about what those options bring to the picture. For example, isolation techniques and the reduction of sound transmission those options provide. For example: control room design philosophy, how they are accomplished in design and what they bring acoustically when done right. Etc. Awesome resource!

Excellent text, but Kindle version is glitchy

Many of the diagrams are too small/low resolution to be read clearly. The glossary is mostly unreadable, with badly formatted overlapping columns of text, etc. Other than those two beefs, this is one of the most valuable references I've read. I learned quite a bit!

As a neurologist I have spent many years studying the brain and its foibles, but I have rarely read such an entertaining and frankly brilliant description of how the brain works.

The book that will destroy your delicate trust between yourself and your brain!

Stumbled across this in a sleep deprived 4am random internet browsing session. Read a couple of pages, got the book, a few chapters in now. ... Now I don't trust my brain nearly as much anymore. And I don't know if I'm better for it. My one go-to for all the answers in life turns out has been lying to me for years. .. It's certainly an entertaining read, and puts quite a knot in your trust in the brain. If you're in a fine agreement with your brain, and want to keep the blind trust, don't pick up the book. But if you wish to find another thing in the world to question the "good intentions" why not ask your brain "why you doing this" pick up the book and ruin that delicate trust between yourself and your brain! xD

Most excellent read.

Excellent compilation of fun facts based on research past and present. Mr. Burnett directs us through a surprisingly comprehensive laundry list of brain functions (malfunctions?) all the while illustrating his points with lively anecdotes and witty observations on human behavior and how it is directed (or misdirected?) by our brain. Written to make a lay reader feel smart, understandable without being condescended to. It was a great read. I recommend it highly.

Beautiful Edition

The book I refer to is the Viking Arkana edition, copyright 1992. It is a beautiful book, bound in a dark blue, soft cover (although still technically a hardcover book). It has G's signature on the front cover in gold, and it is printed on good quality paper. It contains the entire first series. Finally, it has a built in thread that can be used as a bookmark.

"Drumbeat Madrid" takes place in . . . You guessed it: Spain. Move over Hemingway. Here's a new recounting of the running of the Bulls in Pamplona. Mix that together with murder, kidnapping, family betrayals, a missing fortune, and the repressive Franco regime and there's quite a story.

Drum is in Spain as the companion and best man of fellow adventurer Axel who is about to net his sixth wife, the sensuous high Castilian lady whose father was once a captain of the guardia. It is a story filled with adventure and nonstop action in this exotic locale and lingering in the background is the running of the Bulls, a weeklong party in northern Spain. A first-rate story.
