From AudioFile
Are the remains of Noah's Ark resting on a mountain in Iran? The answer is still a mystery, but Robert Cornuke, a former policeman turned biblical explorer, definitely has "ark fever." Kevin King reads Cornuke's first-person account with a feverish tone that sometimes gets a little too "gee whiz" but also reveals the person behind the search as he deals with Middle Eastern authorities, injuries, hikes through terrorist strongholds, and, in one instance, a guide who shares the explorers' food with the hungry, leaving them scrambling for sustenance. With an approach that provides insight into the quest for knowledge, Cornuke's account is intriguing. J.A.S. AudioFile 2006, Portland, Maine-- Copyright AudioFile, Portland, Maine

Must Read
By M. Gilbert
I usually don't read a book through in one night but did this book. Cornuke does a great job writing of his adventures to find Noah's Ark. His fortitude and commitment were commendable and rewarding. I hope there is a follow up to what he has discovered. Cornuke also gives an inspired insight into salvation. This is a must read.

Well-named book: Ark Fever really is a disease!
By David Read
I just finished listening to the audio version of this book. Cornuke has climbed Turkey's Mt. Ararat numerous times, but finally decided that the biblical "mountains of Ararat" were more likely to be in present-day Iran.

Admittedly, Cornuke's adventure stories are often interesting, but the whole premise of his search is flawed. There is nothing in the Bible to indicate that Noah's ark still exists; no biblical prophecy that the ark will ever be found. Think about it. Doesn't it make more sense that the ark would have been recycled to other uses by the post-diluvian settlers? Wouldn't there have been a shortage of worked lumber after the flood, making the ark's wood extremely useful to the flood's eight human survivors? If the ark was still on Turkey's Mt. Ararat (Agri Dagi), wouldn't one of the numerous expeditions have found it by now? The mountain seems pretty-well searched at this point. (To his credit, Cornuke eventually realized that the Ark wasn't necessarily on Turkey's Mt. Ararat, and expanded his search to Iran.)

I have no reason to doubt Cornuke's Christian bona fides, but, frankly, the end of this book was off-putting to me. Cornuke writes as though the rock formation he found in Iran on Mt. Suleiman is certainly what Ed Davis saw and thought was the ark back in WWII, but, of course, Cornuke cannot possibly prove that.

He also writes as though the rock formation on Mt. Suleiman is probably petrified wood. Now, a couple of years ago I saw his photos, posted on the Internet, and the rocks have features that bear a superficial resemblance to wook grain, but there are other geological explanations for that, such as as "foliation" caused by folding and metamorphism. Moreover, unlike Mt. Ararat, Mt. Suleiman is not a volcanic mountain that would produce the chemicals necessary to petrify wood, so it would be anomalous to find petrified wood there. The only way to tell for certain is to examine the speciman under a microscope to look for cell structures that will be present in petrified wood, but not in plain rock. So all Cornuke needed to do was to brink back a sample of the rock. But he didn't do it.

He didn't do it, he claims, because he feared being arrested. But this claim is truly remarkable, because the previous 200 pages of the book describe Cornuke's countless illegal actions. Most of his expeditions were without official permits; he spent literally thousands of dollars bribing the Turkish Military and the Kurdish PKK guerillas who control the higher altitude areas around Ararat. He walked around with $30,000.00 in cash under the insoles of his boots, for purposes of doling out bribes. Even in Iran, he went to places that he did not have permission to go, and hiked up mountains he didn't have permission to climb. Now, at the end, when he claims to have found the petrified wood of Noah's Ark, he expects us to believe he would not bring out a piece of rock for fear of getting arrested? Come on.

I'm afraid that, deep down, Cornuke knew he didn't find anything remotely like Noah's Ark, and that bringing back specimens would prove beyond any doubt that all he found was an interesting rock outcrop. And I think Cornuke wanted to keep alive the notion that he found Noah's Ark, for purposes of selling his books, raising money for his BASE institute, making the lecture circuit, etc. This is tawdry, and doesn't reach the high standard to which Christians are called.

Ark Fever is contagious and compelling!
By Christian Book Previews
Thankfully, there is no vaccine for Ark Fever! Robert Cornuke takes readers on a once-in-a-lifetime journey to find the remains of Noah's Ark. Every page is packed with excitement. Written in a passionate first-person voice, this book becomes a dynamic documentary.

During World War II, an American soldier stationed in Iran, was brought to the frozen summit of a mountain range. Below him was an enormous object, which resembled a battleship stuck on a sandbar. The local people believed it was Noah's Ark, but its exact location has been kept secret for both political and religious reasons.

The testimony of this soldier sparked an intense search for this historic treasure. The pages of this book carefully lead readers through the planning stages of several expeditions to this area. In many ways, this adventure is a real-life mystery, with clues being gathered from Scripture, memories, and maps.

The mountain ranges of Turkey and Iran were the sites of their searches. The men on this mission had to hazard not only the dangers of the climb, but also officials in those countries who didn't appreciate outsiders. Yet, they continued their chase, fueled by their courage and convictions. Their stamina, skill, and steadfast faith are an inspiration. This book is written with clear and compelling details that make each expedition a breathless venture. Political intrigue, narrow escapes and dire disappointments keep the pages turning.

In addition to the author's powerful and persuasive commentary, the book includes maps and color photographs. Robert Cornuke has given readers a chance to see and experience an adventure of a lifetime. -- Joyce Handzo, Christian Book Previews.com

The Complete Guide to the Parables: Understanding and Applying the Stories of Jesus, by R. T. Kendall

The mustard seed. The wineskins. The sheep and the goats. Through these and dozens more parables, Jesus helped his followers-then and now-grasp spiritual truth. Dr. R. T. Kendall, who for years preached from Martyn Lloyd-Jones's pulpit at Westminster Chapel in London, unwraps Jesus' simple stories one by one, uncovering profound meaning. Why did Jesus reveal so much about his Kingdom in parables? "He was building a bridge from the natural to the spiritual," writes Dr. Kendall. He shows how Jesus used parables to sow seeds in the listener's heart that could later grow and bear fruit. Readers will learn how parables safeguard the secrets of God, reveal his sovereignty, and actually survey salvation-from conversion, through the work of the Holy Spirit, to what happens to a believer at death. As readers begin to understand the purpose, promise, and paradox of the parables, they will get to know, in a new and fresh way, the One who told them. Two thousand years ago and today, the parables enliven and enlighten the hearts of all who have ears to hear.

From the Back Cover
Understanding the parables of Jesus is not as easy as you may think. Why? Because Jesus told these stories as much to veil the truth as to express it. For some, hearing a parable only hardens their hearts further; for others, the meaning is clear and their spirits long to know more. As Dr. R.T. Kendall points out, you need the Holy Spirit to reveal the true meaning of the parables. In these pages he unwraps the parables of the mustard seed, the sheep and the goats, the wineskins, and dozens more. You'll learn why Jesus revealed so much about Himself and His Kingdom in simple stories, and how He used these to sow seeds that would later grow and bear fruit. As you begin to understand the purpose, promise, and paradox of the parables, you will know in a fresh way the One who told them. Whether two thousand years ago or today, the parables enliven and enlighten the hearts of those who have ears to hear. Dr. R. T. Kendall, a protg of Dr. Martyn Lloyd-Jones, pastored the historic Westminster Chapel in London for 25 years. The author of numerous books, he conducts "Word, Spirit and Power" conferences throughout North America.

Well-intentioned, but poorly executed
By R. Macfarlane
While I appreciate Dr. Kendall's pastoral heart and desire to provide a comprehensive work on the parables, his Complete Guide to the Parables is unfortunately an example of a low standard of biblical exegetical methods. He admits that this book is a compilation of his various sermons on the parables, and though I'm sure he invested some time into research when composing his sermons, this is not at all reflected in the text. He does not appear to have consulted any commentaries or more informed works on the parables, and instead has simply compiled his personal musings on the parables.

He doesn't say anything completely off-base theologically, but his interpretations of the parables do no justice to the context of the passage or even the text itself of each parable and misses the mark as far as what each one meant on the lips of Jesus or in their first-century Palestinian milieu. The danger with this sort of exegetical technique is that it opens the door for these parables to say just about whatever the interpreter wants them to. This book was well-intentioned and Dr. Kendall's heart for ministry is evident, but if you want to read up on the parables, please consult some of the following works on the parables which are far-superior and properly examine the text as well as historical-research on the parables:

Snodgrass, Klyne - Stories with Intent: A Comprehensive Guide to the Parables of Jesus
Young, Brad H. - The Parables : Jewish Tradition and Christian Interpretation
Young, Brad H. - Jesus and his Jewish Parables : Rediscovering the roots of Jesus' teaching

Not quite complete, but completely worthwhile
By Michelle Van Loon
The title doesn't quite fit the book - this is a collection of sermons. Kendall, a terrific preacher, focuses on application in this nearly complete collection of messages about 33 of Jesus' parables. The subtitle ("Understanding and Applying the Stories of Jesus") is really this book's reason for being.

And in that, Kendall succeeds admirably. You won't be able to walk away from this volume and see these stories in the same way again. Just as Jesus' stories were both easily understandable and completely baffling to almost all of His first-century hearers, you'll find that Dr. Kendall's exposition amplifies both of these experiences for you. You'll understand these stories more clearly - and be challenged and convicted by his eminently practical applications.

I occasionally referred to this book in the latter stages of writing my first book on the parables (Parablelife: Living the stories Jesus told in real time - FaithWalk Publishers, 2005 - available here on amazon) and came back to it again and again while writing the sequel (Uprooted: Growing a Parablelife from the Inside Out, scheduled for release by FaithWalk in late 2006). Dr. Kendall's book helped me to focus on the message of the parables in ways that only great preaching can do. I'm grateful for access to these messages.

Review
This is not so much a 'handbook', more a brilliantly conceived and wonderfully designed piece of scholarship that makes a major contribution of its own to the field of IR. Each of the thirty three individual essays does exactly what the editors must have hoped for - provide a thoroughgoing guide to nearly every conceivable topic of interest to the student of international politics. A must buy for libraries and a first-to-go-to reference point for scholars. An outstanding achievement
Professor Michael Cox
London School of Economics

The vastly changed, second edition of "The Handbook" extends its run as the most authoritative and convenient source for a comprehensive and sophisticated overview of a vibrant field of scholarship. The 33 chapters are highly informative and up-to-date, and authored by a distinguished and diverse group of international scholars. For an overview and as a reference this is a not-to-be-missed volume that all students of international relations will want to add to their personal library
Peter Katzenstein
Professor of International Studies, Cornell University

When incredible uncertainty and sheer unpredictability of international relations as witnessed at the dawn of the twentieth-first century often lead actors to get scared and analysts to procrastinate, this thoroughly edited volume gives a reliable guidance to thinking and action to both analysts and actors with its balance of many angles and its thoroughness of normative, theoretical and empirical investigations
Takashi Inoguchi
Professor Emeritus, University of Tokyo, President, University of Niigata Prefecture

It would be hard to find a better one-volume overview of the field
Anne-Marie Slaughter
Professor of Politics and International Affairs, Princeton University

PREFACE
Dear Reader,

Thank you for picking up this book. It has the potential to change your life. Everything that happens to you from this point on can be different. You can have a different outcome, a different future—different from other workers, and different from the other you, the one who didn’t pick up this book, the one who didn’t try to maneuver for promotion.
This little book went around the world in the media, and was named career management book of the year in Joyce Lain Kennedy’s nationally syndicated column, Careers Now. The award-winning career portal QuintCareers named me a “Career Mastermind” because of this book. When you register that you have accepted a job offer at Columbia Business School’s MBA program, they hand you this book. Many other graduate and undergraduate programs use the book in the same way. “You got a job? Great. Now use this book to create a reputation and get promoted.” I deeply appreciate career centers and all that they do for students. Thousands upon thousands of you, readers from around the world, have used this book to achieve your goals, and I look forward to each and every one of your emails and stories. Your success is eternally gratifying to me.

The tips from the book that seemed to resonate the most, according to your reviews and in your letters and emails, were these:
• A promotion is never a reward, it’s a prediction.
• Irreplaceable people cannot be promoted, ever.
• There is a structural bias in favor of hiring from outside rather than promoting from within, and you must provide certain specific assurances to overcome that bias.
You’ll see these, and much, much more, in the following pages.

The first edition was a bit of a risk. My editors weren’t sure if it made sense to write a book just for top performers and highly ambitious people. I believed that there was plenty of reason to do it. First of all, the majority of workers don’t read any career books at all, so an author is automatically writing for the top half of all careerists. But I knew there were smart, ambitious people out there who could put these principles into play, who didn’t need the kind of rudimentary advice in other guides, who didn’t need to pay money to read advice like this: “Polish your shoes.” I wrote this book for smart, ambitious, hard-working, accomplished contributors. It’s the opposite of remedial. It’s about optimizing and maximizing your career experience.

The tips and techniques that made this book a success did not come from me. They came from the highly ambitious people I met in my career coaching business. I spent twenty years studying what fast-track careerists do, and I have distilled their advice, and their strategies and techniques, into this tome. I am merely the vessel. The content comes from the real experts, that is, people who get promoted, again and again, throughout their careers.

By the way, you do not need to decide to become a fast-track careerist to use the techniques in this book to solve a career problem. You may not become one of those people who will move to Outer Siberia if it will lead to career advancement, or who will turn your entire private life over to a concierge so you can grind out insane hours to win a promotion. You can use these techniques at will, ad hoc, when and how you need them, to best a rival, fix a problem with your boss, improve your reputation, and so on. The techniques work when and how you choose to deploy them. I invite you, however, to push your limits. The fast-track careerists are onto something. If you love your job, you’re pretty likely to like your life. Most of the fast-track careerists who gave me tips for this book love to work, and they love their work.

The other source of information for this book came from human resources professionals, the people who have to decide whom to promote and whom to pass over, whom to offer a stretch assignment and whom to reassign into a less responsible role. Some of the best warnings about what not to do came from them, the most important of which is: Don’t go over your boss’s head without her permission, ever (see chapter 6).

Young people, in particular, don’t seem to get this warning, and it is just as sound advice today as it was a generation ago. Sure, you can email anyone in America today and, yes, we do have the First Amendment, but a lack of consideration of why this is a rule will land you in big trouble with the one person who most controls your destiny, your boss. Mess this one up and you’ll not be needing a promotion, you’ll be needing a new job. Many readers wrote to me about this advice from the first edition, and expressed appreciation for it being so forcefully presented. “I get it, now,” they said.

There was something missing from the first edition, however, which became glaringly obvious when Sheryl Sandberg released her bestseller, Lean In: Women, Work and the Will to Lead. There really are gender differences in play at work. Sandberg meant to throw down a gauntlet and respark the feminist movement. I think she has changed the face of career planning, and changed the center of gravity toward individual women and their choices and away from large social forces. In other words, I think she has established that women can choose and act within a system rather than be acted upon by that system. She did a wonderful job, a public service, and it is certainly a public service she did not have to do. No billionaire has to write a book, let me assure you. You have to read Lean In and you have to check out the movement she launched at leanin.org and hundreds of websites and blogs that are inspired by this work.

I have woven some of these concepts into this book here and there, but I have also crafted an entirely new chapter about women in the workplace, chapter 11, “Women: Take Control of Your Career!” Whether you are a woman, work with women, or have important women in your life, I hope you will take something from it.

The flip side of this is that I discovered there are still some Neanderthal young men out there. I thought they were a dying breed, but my correspondents and certain news items assure me they still exist. I put a rather strong warning beginning on page 43 about that, which I consider part of acknowledging gender differences in the workplace. Again, whether you are a young man, work with young men, or care about a young man, this is an absolutely critical piece for them to grasp. Apparently, social networks and the education
system have failed to provide this absolutely critical piece of information. And, by the way, I do consider this remedial—remedial but necessary.

Finally, in this edition I have beefed up my coverage of what to do if your career stalls. I have a full chapter on career repair, chapter 10, “Know How to Repair Your Career,” beginning on page 159. As part of this, I have improved my coverage of what to do about the crazy and mean people you may have the pleasure to encounter at work. I explicate a career repair system that includes more about when and how to change jobs to advance, which is not part of the other chapters. One gets promoted inside a company, but sometimes you have to give yourself a promotion by abandoning your current employer and seeking a better opportunity elsewhere. If you suspect your career needs repair—for example, you are way more than one promotion away from where you belong—you might start with that chapter first, then restart the book from the beginning.

Readers like you have improved the book, and I hope you will give
me your stories to improve the next edition (don@donaldasher.com).

My very best wishes for your continued success,

Don Asher

Who Gets Promoted, Who Doesn't, and Why? Probably Not Because They Read This Book
By Jack Jacob
Donald Asher is well-known by many in the business community as the author of a book, now in its second edition, that outlines for them how to get promoted. He includes both how to get promoted and what to avoid to keep it from happening. His subtitle is “12 Things You’d Better Do If You Want to Get Ahead”. Since this is a business book, it make sense that he draws all of his illustrations from the business world. While Asher has some great things to say, many of these are self-evident and his mentioning of them is not all that helpful or insightful. For instance, he talks about anticipating change and offering yourself as the solution to the problems or opportunities that change presents. The problem with his encouragement to ride the wave of change comes from the assumption that a person can see all changes and that a person can remain nimble and trained up enough on potential futures to be the answer to anything that might come up. While this would be the best scenario, it is not always possible, nor practical. I realize the reader might be thinking that I am merely claiming sour grapes and not wanting to change and that this reluctance is driving my criticism. My point is simply that it is not always possible to know what is coming, nor economical to train for every potential future.

Asher presents a pyramid for getting promoted in the second chapter of his book. I found this both helpful and a little presumptive. He says that doing your job well is the foundation for future success (again, very obvious), but goes on to say this is not enough. You have to:

1. Do your job well.
2. Make yourself known to the right people.
3. Develop the skillset needed for advancement (see note above).
4. Be available when opportunity knocks. Package yourself for promotion.
5. Win the promotion.

While all of these steps are helpful, they are also nothing new. What is new is that a person would approach their current situation with an eye always on promotion. And herein lies the true power of Asher’s book. Asher suggests that doing one’s job is no longer that best indicator of who is eligible for promotion. For instance, he suggests that anyone who becomes so good at their job so as to become irreplaceable has actually worked against his or herself for promotion. The military has seen their way around this conundrum for a long time, but they have the endless pockets which come from your tax money. For businesses with limited resources, and profitability at stake, this is too often the case. Many employers and senior managers would rather not take a chance on moving someone with a known skill set to a position they may not be able to fill. They do not want to lose the productivity or mid-level leadership. So, while a bit confusing, a person is to do their job well, but not too well.

Asher’s main contribution in Who Gets Promoted and Who Doesn’t and Why is that he challenges the average person to be become more than average and to seek to reach their full potential. He suggests this through being a constant student of the company, people, the art of selling yourself and your company, and the art of reading and managing people. This is worth the cost of the book for the person that has not considered such things before. For those that read this type of material, and for those who have worked in the business world for any amount of time at all, this is obvious and need not be shared.

If I sound like I am confusing and ambivalent towards Who Gets Promoted and Who Doesn’t and Why, it is because I am. The book is the same, so it is fitting. If you have not read any material on promoting yourself, get the book. If you have, don’t bother. If you work in a company that leaves the door open for promotion, and you are not sure how to step through, get the book. If you don’t work in that environment, save $15. If you need a motivational push to get going, read the book. If are already motivated, don’t get bogged down in reading the book. You are probably already doing what Asher recommends.

Disclosure of Material Connection: I received this book free from The Crown Publishing Group as part of their Blogging for Books Program. I was not required to write a positive review. The opinions I have expressed are my own. I am disclosing this in accordance with the Federal Trade Commission’s 16 CFR, Part 255: “Guides Concerning the Use of Endorsements and Testimonials in Advertising.”

If you want to get ahead, buy this book
By Blue Skies
The best book on this subject. No non-sense, practical, sensible advice on how to survive and thrive at work. It is an honest book, so be ready for some hard truths. But I think this book is exactly on-point, and I applaud the author for making this information available to us, and distilling it in a way that's so easy to understand (and with discipline, to implement).

In fact, after I read this book, I had a lot of "aha" moments. Things that used to confuse me before are clear now. This book will allow you to understand how companies make decisions, why you didn't get promoted after your glowing review, how to navigate the office. It's an indispensable book for anyone who cares about their career.

This Book Will Help You Advance Your Career
By Derek Dix
Every person I know wants to have a great career! Who wouldn’t want to have money to buy the car they want, go on that vacation they want, buy that house, get a pay raise every year, and never have to worry about money again? Many people have these desires, so why is it that so many people are having a hard time landing that “perfect job”?

In this book, Donald Asher helps us to see 12 areas where we could be (most likely are) making mistakes when it comes to our career path. We all know some things about career planning, but do we really understand what we need to say and do to get where we want to be? Don’t worry, after reading this book I came to realize that I really had no idea!

The book is divided into 12 easy to read chapters. Each one covering an aspect of career building/planning that we often don’t think about. He covers areas like: knowing when to look for more work, how to promote yourself, education, having a plan, repairing your career, and many others.

I would highly recommend this book to college students, people who hate their job, those working part-time, and anyone who wants to see how they could advance their career!

A decent read.
By Terminus of X
It's an okay book, but given that I haven't read any comparable Hospitality books on leadership, my commentary should be taken with a grain of salt. I like how this book integrated the ideas of W. Edward Deming & Juran, two of the foremost historical experts on Quality in management. So from that perspective, this book should be taken seriously as a scholarly work.

They are sleek, swift, and deadly. The are the X-wing fighters. And as the struggle rages across the vastness of space, the fearless men and women who pilot them risk both their lives and their machines. Their mission: to defend the Rebel Alliance against a still-powerful and battle-hardened Imperial foe in a last-ditch effort to control the stars!

Its very name strikes fear into enemy hearts. So when Rebel hero Wedge Antilles rebuilds the legendary Rogue Squadron, he seeks out only the best -- the most skilled, the most daring X-wing pilots. Through arduous training and dangerous missions, he weeds out the weak from the strong, assembling a group of hard-bitten warriors willing to fight, ready to die. Antilles knows the grim truth: that even with the best X-wing jockeys in the galaxy, many will not survive their near-suicidal missions. But when Rogue Squadron is ordered to assist in the assault on the heavily fortified Imperial stronghold of Black Moon, even the bravest must wonder if any at all will survive. . . .

You're good, Corran, but you're no Luke Skywalker.Corran Horn's cheek still burned at the memory of Commander Antilles's evaluation of his last simulator exercise. The line had been a simple comment, not meant to be cruel nor delivered that way, but it cut deep into Corran.I've never tried to suggest I'm that good of a pilot.

He shook his head. No, you just wanted it to be self-evident and easily recognized by everyone around you.Reaching out he flicked the starter switches for the X-wing simulator's engines."Green One has four starts and is go." All around him in the cockpit various switches, buttons, and monitors flashed to life."Primary and secondary power is at full."

Ooryl Qrygg, his Gand wingman, reported similar start-up success in a high-pitched voice."Green Two is operational."

Green Three and Four checked in, then the external screens came alive projecting an empty starfield."Whistler, have you finished the navigation
calculations?"

The green and white R2 unit seated behind Corran hooted, then the navdata spilled out over.Corran's main monitor He punched a button sending the same coordinates out to the other pilots in Green Flight."Go to light speed and rendezvous on the Redemption."

As Corran engaged the X-wing's hyperdrive, the stars elongated themselves into white cylinders, then snapped back into pinpoints and began to revolve slowly, transforming themselves into a tunnel of white light.Corran fought the urge to use the stick to compensate for the roll.In space, and especially hyperspace, up and down were relative. How his ship moved through hyperspace didn't really matter--as long as it remained on the course Whistler had calculated and had attained sufficient velocity before entering hyperspace, he'd arrive intact.

Flying into a black hole would actually make this run easier.Every pilot dreaded the Redemption run.The scenario was based on an Imperial attack on evacuation ships back before the first Death Star had been destroyed. While the Redemption waited for three Medevac shuttles and the corvette Korolev to dock and off-load wounded, the Imperial frigate Warspite danced around the system and dumped TIE fighters and bombers out to do as much damage as they could.

The bombers, with a full load of missiles, could do a lot of damage. All the pilots called the Redemption scenario by another name: the Requiem scenario. The Warspite would only deploy four starfighters and a half-dozen bombers--known in pilot slang as "eyeballs" and "dupes" respectively-- but it would do so in a pattern that made it all but impossible for the pilots to save the Korolev. The corvette was just one big target, and the TIE bombers had no trouble unloading all their missiles into it.

Stellar pinpoints elongated again as the fighter came out of hyperspace.Off to the port side Corran saw the Redemption.Moments later Whistler reported that the other fighters and all three Medevac shuttles had arrived. The fighters checked in and the first shuttle began its docking maneuver with the Redemption.

"Green One, this is Green Four."

"Go ahead, Four"

"By the book, or are we doing something fancy? "

Corran hesitated before answering.By book, Nawara Ven had referred to the general wisdom about the scenario. It stated that one pilot should play fleethund and race out to engage the first TIE flight while the other three fighters remained in close as backup. As long as three fighters stayed at home, it appeared, the Warspite dropped ships off at a considerable distance from the Korolev. When they didn't, it got bolder and the whole scenario became very bloody.

The problem with going by the book was that it wasn't a very good strategy. It meant one pilot had to deal with five TIEs--two eyeballs and three dupes--all by himself, then turn around and engage five more.Even with them coming in waves, the chances of being able to succeed against those odds were slim.

Doing it any other way was disastrous.Besides, what loyal son of Corellia ever had any use for odds?

"By the book.Keep the home fires burning and pick up after me."

"Done.Good luck."

"Thanks." Corran reached up with his right hand and pressed it against the lucky charm he wore on a chain around his neck.Though he could barely feel the coin through his gloves and the thick material of his flight suit, the familiar sensation of the metal resting against his breastbone brought a smile to his face.It worked for you a lot, Dad, let's hope all its luck hasn't run out yet.

Isle openly acknowledged that he'd been depending quite a bit on luck to see him through the difficulties of settling in with the Alliance forces. Learning the slang took some work-- moving from calling TIE starfighters "eyeballs" to calling Interceptors "squints" made a certain amount of sense, but many other terms had been born of logic that escaped him.Everything about the Rebellion seemed odd in comparison to his previous life and fitting in had not been easy.

Nor will be winning this scenario.

The Korolev materialized and moved toward the Redemption, prompting Corran to begin his final check. He'd mulled the scenario over in his mind time and time again. In previous runs, when he served as a home guard to someone else's fleethund, he'd had Whistler record traces on the TIE timing patterns, flight styles, and attack vectors. While different cadets flew the TIE half of the simulations, the craft dictated their performance and a lot of their initial run sequence had been preprogrammed.

A sharp squawk from Whistler alerted Corran to the Warspite's arrival. "Great, eleven kicks aft." Pulling the stick around to the right, Corran brought the X-wing into a wide turn.At the end of it he punched the throttle up to full power.Hitting another switch up to the right, he locked the S-foils into attack position."Green One engaging."

Rhysati's voice came cool and strong through the radio."Be all over them like drool on a Hutt."

"I'll do my best, Green Three." Corran smiled and waggled the X-wing as he flew back through the Alliance formation and out toward the Warspite. Whistler announced the appearance of three TIE bombers with a low tone, then brought the sound up as two TIE fighters joined them.

"Whistler, tag the bombers as targets one, two, and three." As the R2 unit complied with that order, Corran pushed shield power full to front and brought his laser targeting program up on the main monitor. With his left hand he adjusted the sighting calibration knob on the stick and got the two fighters. Good, looks like three klicks between the eyeballs and the bombers.

Corran's right hand again brushed the coin beneath his flight suit.He took a deep breath, exhaled slowly, then settled his hand on the stick and let his thumb hover over the firing button. At two klicks the heads-up display painted a yellow box around the lead TIE fighter. The box went green as the fighter's image locked into the HUD's targeting cross and Whistler's shrill bleat filled the cockpit.Corran's thumb hit the button, sending three bursts of laser bolts at the lead fighter.

The first set missed but the second and third blasted through the spherical cockpit. The hexagonal solar panels snapped off and spun forward through space while the ion engines exploded into an expanding ball of incandescent gas.

Corran kicked the X-wing up in a ninety-degree snap-roll and sliced through the center of the explosion.Laser fire from the second fighter lit up his forward shields, making it impossible for him to get a good visual line on the TIE. Whistler yowled, complaining about being a target.Corran hurried a shot and knew he hit, but the TIE flashed past and continued on in at the Korolev.

Time to write a new chapter for the book on the Requiem scenario. Corran throttled hack almost all the way to zero and let the X-wing decelerate."Whistler, bring up target one."

The image of the first TIE bomber filled his monitor.Corran switched over to proton torpedo target control. The HUD changed to a larger box and Whistler began beeping as he worked supplying data to the targeting computer for a missile lock.

"Green One, your velocity is down to one percent.Do you need help?"

"Negative, Green Two."

"Corran, what are you doing?"

"Making the book a short story." I hope.

The HUD went red and Whistler's tone became constant.Corran punched the button and launched the first missile."Acquire target two." The HUD flashed yellow, then red, and the pilot launched the second missile.

Numbers scrolled away to zero as the missiles streaked in at their targets. Two kilometers away the first missile hit, shredding the first TIE bomber. Seconds later the second missile hit its target.A novalike explosion lit the simulator's cockpit, then melted into the blackness of space.

"Acquire target three."

Even as he gave the order he knew the rate of closure between the bomber and his ship would make the last missile shot all but impossible."Cancel three." Corran throttled up again as the third bomber sailed past and brought his ship around. He switched back to laser targeting and climbed right up on the bomber's stern

The dupe's pilot tried to evade him.He juked the double-hulled ship to the left, then started a long turn to the right, but Corran was of no mind to lose him.He cut his speed, which kept the bomber in front of him, then followed it in its turn.As he leveled out again on its tail, he triggered two laser bursts and the targeting computer reported hull damage.

The bomber's right wing came up in a roll and Corran did the same thing.Had he continued to fly level, the X-wing's lasers would have passed on either side of the bomber's fuselage, giving the bomber a few seconds more of life. Keeping the bomber centered in his crosshairs, Corran hit twice more and the bulky craft disintegrated before him.

Pushing his throttle to full, Corran scanned for the fighter he'd missed. He found it two klicks out and going in toward the Korolev. He also found five more TlEs coming in from the other side of the corvette, eighteen kilometers away.Damn, tile bomber took more time than I had to give it.

He brought the torpedo targeting program back up and locked on to the remaining fighter. The HUD seemed to take forever before it went red and acquired a lock.Corran fired a missile and watched it blast through the fighter, then turned his attention to the new TlEs.

"Green One, do you want us to engage?"

Corran shook his head."Negative, Two.Warspite is still here and could dump another flight." He sighed."Move to intercept the fighters, but don't go beyond a klick from the Korolev."

"On it."

Good, they can tie the fighters up while I dust these devils.Corran studied the navigational data Whistler was giving him.The Korolev, the bombers, and his X-wing formed a shrinking triangle. If he flew directly at the bombers he would end up flying in an arc, which would take more time than he had and let them get close enough to launch their mis siles at the corvette. That would be less than useless as far as he was concerned.

"Whistler, plot me an intercept point six klicks out from the Korolev."

The R2 whistled blithely, as if that calculation was so simple even Corran should have been able to do it in his head.Steering toward it, Corran saw he'd have just over a minute to deal with the bombers before they were in firing range on the Korolev. Not enough time.

Flicking two switches, Corran redirected generator energy from recharging his shields and lasers into the engines. It took the acceleration compensator a second to cycle up, so the ship's burst of speed pushed Corran back into the padding of his command seat.Taxis better work.

"Green One, the Warspite has hyped. Are we released to engage fighters?"

"Affirmative, Three.Go get them." Corran frowned for a second, knowing his fellow pilots would make short work of the TIE fighters. They would deny him a clean sweep, but he'd willingly trade two TlEs for the corvette.Commander Antilles might have gotten them all himself, but then he's got two Death Stars painted on the side of his X-wing.

"Whistler, mark each of the bombers four, five, and six." Range to intercept was three Licks and he had added thirty seconds to his fighting time. "Acquire foun"

The targeting computer showed him to be coming in at a forty-five-degree angle to the flight path of his target, which meant he was way off target. He quickly punched the generator back into recharging lasers and his shields, then pulled even more energy from his quartet of Incom 4L4 fusial thrust engines and shunted it into recharging his weapons and

The resource redirection brought his speed down.Corran pulled back on the stick, easing the X-wing into a turn that brought him head-on into the bombers. Tapping the stick to the left, he centered the targeting box on the first of the dupes.

The HUD started yellow, then quickly went red.Corran fired a missile. "Acquire five." The HUD started red and Whistler's keen echoed through the cockpit. The Corellian fired a second missile."Acquire six."

Whistler screeched.

Corran looked down at his display.Scrolling up the screen, sandwiched between the reports of mlssile hits on the three bombers, he saw a notation about Green Two."Green Two, report."

"He's gone, One."

"A fighter got him?"

"No time to chat..." The radio call from the Twi'lek in Green Four ended in a hiss of static.

"Rhysati? "

"Got one, Corran, but this last one is good."

"Hang on."

"I'll do my best."

"Whistler, acquire six."

The R2 unit hissed. The last bomber had already shot past the intercept point and was bearing in on the Korolev. The pilot had the widebodied craft slowly spinning, making it a difficult target for a missile lock. The Korolev, being as big as it was, would present large enough of a target that even a rolling ship could get a lock on it.

And once he has that lock, the Korolev is so much space junk. Corran switched back to lasers and pushed his X-wing forward.Even though two Licks separated them, he triggered a couple of laser blasts. He knew his chances of hitting were not good at that range, but the light from the bolts wou shoot past the TIE and give the pilot something to think about. And I want him thinking about me, not that nerf-vette grazing there.

Corran redirected all power back into the engines and shot forward. Two more laser blasts caused the TIE bomber to shy a bit, but it had pushed into target-acquisition range. The ship's roll began to slow as the pilot fixated on his target, then as Corran brought his lasers to bear, the bomber jinked and cut away to port.

The Corellian's eyes narrowed.Bror Jace has got to

A great start to the X-Wing series
By Joe Sherry
"Rogue Squadron" is the first book (of 9) in the X-Wing series set in the Star Wars universe. The Rogue Squadron is legendary. Responsible for the destruction of both Death Stars, as well as being one of the primary defense forces on Hoth, the Rogue Squadron is given the toughest missions and has the highest death rate in the entire Rebel Alliance. Commander Wedge Antilles has been given a new mission for his Rogue Squadron, straight from Admiral Ackbar and the leadership of the Alliance: assemble the best of the best pilots and reform Rogue Squadron to tackle the highest profile, most difficult missions and try and end this war against the Empire.

Emperor Palpatine might be two years dead by the start of "Rogue Squadron", but the Empire is vast and top Empire officials have taken hold of the Empire (even as it splinters apart). Some planets may not even know of his death, yet. It was a major victory, but the war still rages on. Ysanne Isard, the head of Imperial Intelligence runs the Empire in everything but name. Nicknamed "Iceheart", she is exactly that. Isard is cold, ruthless, and subtle in her actions: a true intelligence officer. She continues to hunt the Alliance, and in particular, the symbol that is Rogue Squadron.

The primary protagonist of "Rogue Squadron" is the Correllian Corran Horn, a former member of the Correllian Security (CorSec). He is one of the best in Rogue Squadron, which makes him one of the elite pilots in the galaxy. Corran Horn, while a great pilot and an asset to the Alliance, is also a hunted man. Kirtan Loor, an underling of Isard and a man with a grudge against Horn, is put in charge of the mission to destroy Rogue Squadron and protect the Empire.

Being a novel about an X-Wing fighter squadron, "Rogue Squadron" is filled with space battles and dog fights and is action packed. This is a fast paced Star Wars novel and is one of the better ones that I have read. Being set after "Return of the Jedi" means that we don't know how the story is going to play out or what the future is for the Alliance (every prequel novel has to fit itself into the known events of the movies). This frees the story up a bit, and with a novel built around characters who were not even in the films (except for minor characters like Wedge), there is a sense of freedom here. It helps that Michael Stackpole is able to tell an entertaining story that also serves to build the overreaching plotline of the X-Wing series. For a reader looking to discover what happens after "Return of the Jedi", "Rogue Squadron" is the perfect place to begin.

Stackpole is God of the X-Wing Series
By Deborah ONeal
Like many when i first bought this book i was reluctant to read it because, i didn't think that a book about X-Wings was going to be any good...but 4 years after buying it i finally decided to read it and and i can say is WHY DID I WAIT SO LONG?? This book was amazing, there is almost constant action all the way thru. I hope the other books in the series can match the intensity of this one.
Pros:
1. Great description of battles
2. Many new people, and a handy little list in the front of the book to show you whos who incase you somehow get Rhysati Ynr and Nawara Ven mixed up...rofl
3. Since there are so many new people Stackpole can have pretty much free reign over what happens to them. Unlike when Han, Leia or Luke are involved in something, you always know they will escape.
Cons:
1. At points it seems like all the characters and being thrown at you all at once, mainly in the first battle.
2. This is more of an annoyance then a Downside to the book, all the slang and abbreviations that are used seem a little out of place.
Overall this is a great book and i would recommend it very Strongly.

Beyond Episode 6 in Star Wars
By J. Michael Copening
Ever wonder what happens after the Star Wars Trilogy? I have always been interested in what happens after the first three movies. This book shows how Commander Wedge Antilles must rebuild the legendary Rogue Squadron. Rogue Squadron is the elite fighting corps of the Alliance, and now New Republic. You get an excellent idea of what it is like to fly, and pilot the X-Wings, which are the spacecraft most commonly flown by Rogue Squadron. Corran Horn is one of the new characters introduced into the Star Wars Galaxy, and one of my favorites. He is one of Rogue Squadrons most talented pilots. The battles in this story bring you right into the cockpit of the X-Wings, and the battles are very well described and utterly exciting. I loved this book right from the start. The book takes you from space battles to new planets in this galaxy. The book is well detailed, and shows the characters personalities with vivid interest. I would recommend that Star Wars fans, and those that are just interested, should read this book. I would say anyone in high school, or even middle school, could read this book.
