About the Author

Miguel F. Acevedo has 38 years of academic experience, the last 20 of these as faculty member of the University of North Texas (UNT). His career has been interdisciplinary, especially at the interface of science and engineering. He obtained his Ph.D. in biophysics from the University of California Berkeley and master's degrees in electrical engineering and computer science from Berkeley and the University of Texas at Austin, respectively. Prior to UNT, he was at the Universidad de Los Andes in Merida, Venezuela, where he taught for 18 years. He has served on the Science Advisory Board of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and on many review panels of the U.S. National Science Foundation. He has received numerous research grants and written many journal articles, book chapters, and proceedings articles. UNT has recognized him with the Regent’s Professor rank, the Citation for Distinguished Service to International Education, and the Regent’s Faculty Lectureship. About the Author
Michael G. Maxfield is Professor of Criminal Justice at John Jay College, City University of New York. He is the author of numerous articles and books on a variety of topics, including victimization, policing, homicide, community corrections, and long-term consequences of child abuse and neglect. Working with students and colleagues at the John Jay College Research and Evaluation Center, Professor Maxfield developed the evidence generation approach to applied justice research. He served as editor of the Journal of Research in Crime and Delinquency from 2008-2016.

Earl R. Babbie graduated from Harvard University before enlisting in the U.S. Marine Corps. He received his Ph.D. from the University of California, Berkeley, and began teaching shortly thereafter. Credited with defining research methods for the social sciences, Dr. Babbie has written several texts, including the bestselling THE PRACTICE OF SOCIAL RESEARCH and THE BASICS OF SOCIAL RESEARCH.

This book sucks. Revise the content please.

I usually enjoy reading texts especially since it pertains to my field, however I found this textbook extremely difficult to read. Not because of the concepts but I found the author's examples and text altogether is just odd to read, as if it were written by an amateur. I don't know what it is exactly but I'll tell you you will not enjoy reading every word of this textbook.

About the Author
James Lincoln Collier has written many books for children, including "Give Dad My Best" and "Planet out of the Past". He has also contributed more than five hundred articles to the "New York Times Magazine", "Reader s Digest", and "Boy s Life". His honors include the Kidger Prize for Teaching, the Jane Addams Peace Prize, and the Newbery Honor.

Christopher Collier is an author and historian. He attended Clark University and Columbia University, where he earned his PhD. He was the official Connecticut State Historian from 1984 to 2004 and is now professor of history emeritus at the University of Connecticut. He is the brother of James Lincoln Collier, with whom he has written a number of novels, most of which are based on historic events. His books have been nominated for several awards, including the Newbery Honor and the Pulitzer Prize.

This book is awesome!!

In my 8th grade English class I had to read My Brother Sam Is Dead as a reguired historical fiction book. I read the book in class as well as out of class on my own time. My Brother Sam Is Dead takes place during the Revolutionary War in a little town called Redding. Tim, a teenager, is telling the reader his feelings of the war and how the war affected him. I think teh author choose to tell the story through Tim because he was torn between being a Loyalist like his father or a Patriot like his older brother Sam. Tim's father doesn't think that his family shoyuld be involved in the war and Sam thinks it's his duty to fight for his country. Irony, was what made the book My Brother Sam Is Dead interesting. A good example is when Tim finds out his father had died on a British Jail Ship. This was unexpected because he was a Loyalist and he died on British Jail Ship. I expected him to die on a Patriot Jail Ship. Once you read what happens, your like I didn't expect that to happen. The same thing happens to Sam at the end of the book, but in a different way. In My Brother Sam Is Dead there were three main conflicts. The conflicts were personal, political, and character. Tim was the character withthe personal conflict. He was trying to decide whether to be a Patriot or a Loyalist. Tim knew his father had his reasons for being a Loyalist and so did his brother Sam. Tim wanted to be like his father, but also wanted to be like his brother Sam. The next big conflict was the political one. England and The Colonies were fighting over who got to run The Colonies. England thought they should get to run them because they had founded The Colonies. The people living in The Colonies thought they should get to run The Colonies because they lived there and didnt' believe in England's rule. The last conflict was between Sam and his father. This kind of conflict is called a character conflict. Sam wanted to go to war and fight an the Patriot side, while his father didn't think he should fight in the war. Sam's father was also a Loyalist so he didn't believe in anyhting the Patriots did or thought was right. In the book My Brother Sam Is Dead there were many great parts that I enjoyed. One part of the book that really got me interested was when Tim and his father were ambushed on their way to Verplex Point to trade the cattle for supplies they needed for their tavern in Redding. An other part was when Tim finds out Sam took his father's only gun, Brown Bess, when Sam's father specifically told Sam not too. If I had to pick a theme for the book it would most likely be "Everything happens for a reason." To me, it was like everything that happened to Tim changed the way he lived, acted or even thought. My Brother Sam Is Dead was full of suspense all the way through the book. I could hardly put the book down since I started reading it. I also read a historical fiction book called, One Thousand White Women. It was great too! One Thousand White Women was written in a journal form and I liked that format better than the traditional story form of My Brother Sam is Dead. I hope you enjoy both of these books as much as I did.

GREAT HISTORICAL FICTION FOR YOUNG ADULTS

This is my favorite among the Collier brothers' books. This has been a successful book for me to hand to many (usually boys) reluctant readers. Young readers can relate to Tim Meeker's conscience telling him to do "what's right" and his desire to be like his big brother Sam. Conflict over the Revolutionary War(which is just beginning at the start of the book) brings emotional confrontations to the Meeker household. Most readers can sympathize with Tim as he watches his family torn apart by the question of loyalty to the King or to the colonists. Tim just wants to be loyal to his family, and he wishes Sam would too. This novel is an easy read and is an enthralling read with its taps into the violence of this war. Readers are so involved by the end of the novel that they want to pick up another of the Collier brothers' historical fiction. And as the authors say, if they said there was two-feet of snow in January of 1778, then it really happened. This is realistic historical fiction throughout. One of the authors does the research & the other does the creative writing to complete this package. This is a great literary addition to any history class. If you like this one, I suggest also reading Bloody Country & The Winter Hero, both by the same authors.

Didn't live up to the hype

Evidently this is a frequently banned book because of the gratuitous language and violent war themes. I think it should be banned because it's not very well-written and its anti-war theme is so unsubtle it practically bludgeons the reader over the head. Repeatedly. The book is meant to convince us that war is bad and affects innocent civilians in all sorts of brutal ways. While this is true, the narrator, Timmy, has a hard time convincing us. The story is disjointed and more a series of vignettes, and between the scenes he is constantly stating that life goes on and he's forgotten what came before. It was written in 1975 so I understand the Newbery committee appreciating the anti-war bias set in historical fiction, but I always wish the selections were uniformly timeless. Alas, they are products of their time. "The Fighting Ground" by Avi explores the same theme in the same time period and it's an excellent book, much better told than this one.

About the Author
Richard L. Daft, Ph.D., is the Brownlee O. Currey, Jr. Professor of Management and Principal Senior Lecturer in the Owen Graduate School of Management at Vanderbilt University, where he specializes in the study of leadership and organization theory. Dr. Daft is a fellow of the Academy of Management and has served on the editorial boards of Academy of Management Journal, Administrative Science Quarterly, and Journal of Management Education. He was associate editor-in-chief of Organization Science and associate editor of Administrative Science Quarterly. Dr. Daft has authored or co-authored 13 books, including The Executive and the Elephant, Organization Theory and Design, and Management. He also has authored dozens of scholarly articles, papers, and chapters, and he has published in the Administrative Science Quarterly, Academy of Management Journal, Academy of Management Review, Strategic Management Journal, Journal of Management; Accounting, Organizations and Society, Management Science, MIS Quarterly, and Organizational Behavior Teaching Review. Dr. Daft has received several government research grants in organization design, organizational innovation and change, strategy implementation, and organizational information processing. An active teacher and respected consultant, Dr. Daft has served as associate dean and helped manage a start-up enterprise. well written book with helpful examples explaining the content

This textbook is a requirement for a Contemporary Management Theory class that I am taking. I am in the first couple of chapters and so far I am enjoying the material. Very good examples shared to explain the content and the professor loves this edition. My only knock is around the price. $300+ for a book? Come on.... I was able to find it a little cheaper because it was used but these crazy prices are really hurting students.

Greil Marcus is the author of When That Rough God Goes Riding and Like a Rolling Stone (both with PublicAffairs), The Old Weird America, The Shape of Things to Come, Mystery Train, Dead Elvis, In the Fascist Bathroom, and other books; a twentieth anniversary edition of his Lipstick Traces was published in 2009. With Werner Sollors he is the editor of A New Literary History of America, published by Harvard University Press. Gruel-ing Marcus...

Hoo, boy, nothing prepared me for Bob Dylan by Greil Marcus: Writings 1968-2010. This damn thing is impenetrable. While the writings are grouped by dates, there isn’t a shred of narrative and no real flow to the book. I cringed when one of the “Real Life Rock Top Ten” pieces that dot the book came calling — Marcus describes them as “noise” from the conversations about and created by Dylan and his work. I guess that’s a good word, but I have no clue what these interjections were about. Read my full review at allmusicbooksdotcom. I’ll give Marcus the last word, recycling the opening line of perhaps his most famous reviews for Dylan’s Self-Portrait: What is this s***?

Revealing exploration

Marcus is one of the most acute rock music commentators, and he is by turns revealing and scathing about Dylan. This is a useful tool to help evaluate Dylan's later work as well as one to contextualize it adequately. This prompted me to listen again to some of the American folk music which so influenced and still influences Dylan.

The impossible perspectives and multigraded blues and yellows of the cityscapes here seem more bizarrely true to San Francisco than stills from Vertigo. Heavy Traffic, Deli Bowls, Tie Rack and Rabbit are just what they say they are, yet their surfaces coax us into looking at them harder and longer than such banal objects could possibly entice on their own. Such dressings-up themselves are commonplace in media-saturated American life, and Thiebaud redirects their energy unerringly throughout the 160 illustrations here, most in color. One might wish for a less insidery guide to the work than Gopnik's, but the panache of his biographical prose carries readers right into the paintings, well and comprehensively selected by Nash, whose own essay provides welcome detail on Thiebaud's working life.

Gorgeous

I've loved Wayne Thiebaud ever since I was a kid, leafing through my dad's art books - and now that I bake so much I have an even deeper fondness for the crisp cake and pastry paintings. This book covers a wide range of Thiebaud's work, from food to portraits to landscapes (especially my favorites, the vertigo-inspiring San Francisco hills!), and all are reproduced in beautiful crisp prints. The book is big enough to give you clear images but not so big that it won't fit on a bookshelf.

The narrative throughout is also well written, if you can ever bring yourself to read rather than just dreamily flipping through the images.

If you're a Thiebaud fan, I suggest you get this book, I doubt you'll be disappointed!

Great Artist, Great Book, Perfect for a Collection

Thiebaud is one of my favourite artists, and I wanted to add a book of his work to my collection. I was looking for one that had lots of high quality, colour pictures, and this is the perfect one! It not only has the amazing pictures I was looking for, but a great biography, as well. The biography takes up about 1/3 of the book, and the rest is pictures of his work. It's a large book perfect for a coffee table. I was impressed by all the pictures, and the great colour. I would suggest this to any artist, or art admirer!

Enlightening!

I own lots of art books, but this is already one of my favorites. I stare and stare at these pictures and marvel at what he has done. The painting is so simple at first glance, and so much more complex and fascinating the longer I look. If you are a painter, there is very much to be learned from these paintings. The phrase "paint lovingly applied" in the editorial review is most apt--and as a result, one loves looking at it.
