Tim Crook has written, directed and produced a number of international award wining radio plays, series and documentaries. He is the Head of Radio at Goldmsiths College, University of London, and the author of International Radio Journalism.

Best Book Published on Radio Drama

I am a PhD student and this book provides the most up to date and well written outline of studying and making radio drama that I can find anywhere in publications. Other books on radio drama are very old (about 20 years). Crook not only does an original media history on the subject which is quite the best scholarship on this subject available, he really inspires you to appreciate this wonderful form of story telling. You get an intellectual/academic theory on things like radio drama writing which is done in a clear style and then you are offered the nuts and bolts of the craft.
The text also modernises all the existing approaches to radio drama. The section on the role of improvised/live radio drama in phone-in programmes and hoaxes is brilliant and original. He also takes a well known BBC radio play 'Spoonface Steinberg' by Lee Hall which I happened to think was one of the best things I have heard in recent years. (It's also available on cassette via Amazon.com) In his writing Crook explains why artistically and from a producer/listener's point of view it was so good and merits attention. But then he subjects it to Cultural Studies analysis and raises the kind of questions which are going to enhance radio drama as an important cultural form of storytelling. This is really critical and thought-provoking.
You will not be disappointed reading this book if you are in to storytelling, radio, radio drama, writing etc.
I checked out the comments by reviewer 'Gwen- Yale University'. But none of the quotes she has in her review appear anywhere in the book.
They are taken from an on-line essay by Crook 'International Radio Drama.' Everybody's entitled to their point of view but I think it is good that mainstream scholars are now recognising African-American radio dramatists such as Richard Durham and centrally rooting their position.
In Radio Drama-Theory and Practice Crook adopts a McLuhanesque line on how audio drama has a future on the Internet and persists as a story-telling presence in commercial production on most radio formats.
There is also a very helpful bibliography which can take you to radio drama texts you may never knew existed.
I would also recommend a book on Radio Acting by Alan Beck which was published 3 years ago. In the past 'British Radio Drama' by Drakakis (Cambridge University Press 1981) is magnificent. Let's hope there are more good books on radio drama coming out.
So my conclusion is read or buy this book and you will not be disappointed.

The book is long on theory and history of radio drama. If you need that, buy it! If you are looking for practical guidance to produce radio drama, only about three of 23 chapters will be of help. But you might find more in its bibliogrpahy. J.

Really Good Value New Look At Radio Drama

I found this book pretty cool because you get an angle on the academic things such as a look at media history through radio or sound plays which takes you right up into the World Wide Web world.
It is also the first book that has explained how to structure a play and juggle the writing of characters with sorting out a plot. I know there are other things around but this book explains it. Suddenly it all clicked.
There is a long section on improvisation in live radio and it kind of bravely suggests that hoaxers on the radio are live dramatists.
I found this book really good value because it does not insult the intelligence of the reader and also it is not full of that academic stuffy kind of writing which sends me to sleep.
Fully recommend it.

About the Author
Valerie Hansen teaches Chinese and world history at Yale, where she is professor of history. Her research draws on nontraditional sources to capture the experiences of ordinary people. Curtis), Negotiating Daily Life in Traditional China, and Changing Gods in Medieval China, 1127–1279.

A superb new edition

This new edition of The Open Empire shares the same global approach as the first edition and continues to make innovative use of artistic, literary, and archaeological sources. The second edition also includes new material on women in the Qin dynasty, an updated discussion of the interactions between Tang-dynasty China and the Islamic world, and a strengthened comparison of the Kitan and Chinese, among other important additions and revisions. There is also a whole new chapter on the Qing dynasty up until the end of the Qianlong reign (1796), informed by the "New Qing history" and the recent work on the "Great Divergence." Students and teachers will value this book: it is ideal for one-semester courses on imperial China and several chapters could be profitably assigned in world history classes too.

A superb introduction to the history of China and a refreshing breath of fresh air compared to earlier English language histories, which were more or less bounded by the Chinese dynastic histories. Not only does the author take issue with now-hoary stereotypes of dynastic rise and fall, inevitable Sinization of barbarians, the centrality of a distinctively "Chinese" model, but also adds a new dimension beyond the standard textual sources that includes expands recent archaeological discoveries, evidence from [not just a recording of] popular literature , an attentive examination of the role of women [long neglected or under-emphasized by earlier surveys ]and the often-pivotal importance of the non-Inner China littoral areas. Although some may criticize the relatively less attention paid to classical philosophy as opposed to the material culture, I think the correction is long overdue.

Unusual, Complicated Ideas and Recipes. Profesional Fare

The most important thing to mention about this book is that it is not a notebook. It is composed of dessert recipes, equipment tips, and sidebars on fruit ingredients made up to look like a notebook. In fact, the sidebars on fruits, however informative they happen to be, are very incongruous matched up with the `notebook' appearance of the recipes and theme of the book.

The most famous notebooks I know are those of philosopher Ludwig Wittgenstein, where his notebooks are composed of many aphorisms. I can imagine similar notebooks of literary figures, historians, naturalists, graphic artists and journalists, and I can imagine finding these musings interesting. On the other hand, I cannot imagine finding the notebooks of scientists or cooks very interesting. Having been a practicing chemist, I can attest to the fact that the great bulk of scientific notes are simply columns of numbers and formulas. I can imagine a culinary notebook, being very similar to scientific research in that it simply repeats the same procedure over and over again varying a single aspect each time can be pretty dull. Witness the articles in `Cooks Illustrated' where we are not presented with all the details, only the summary of dozens of attempts at achieving the best recipe. But then, I am pretty sure that only professional philosophers read Wittgenstein's notebooks.

In this book and in his more conventional book, `Essential Cuisine', the author makes much of his wanderings through the countryside of his native region of France, Aubrac, which is in the southwestern hills, about a hundred miles inland from the Bay of Biscay and Bayonne and Bordeaux. At least it is voice from a new region, neither Lyon nor Provence. The introduction cites how the author Michal Bras roams about the countryside noting flavors and scents. But there is the rub. How do you put scents of acacia flowers, chicory roots and white pine needles in a notebook. I guess this is the opening which make room for the little monographs on fruits. Believe it or not, the author actually does give recipes including acacia and chicory. Oddly enough, there are no little monographs on these two ingredients. And, the order of the ingredients monographs seem to show very little rhyme or reason. It would seem to make sense to put all the citrus monographs together, but they are not. The monographs are also a very odd mix of information, certainly different from a naturalist's observations of the fruits in situ as you may expect to find in a notebook. The pieces contain an assortment of information on geographical distribution, history, and care in using, as with the little tidbit of washing blueberries in vinegar to ward against fox piss. But I go on too much about the fruity notes.

All the recipes are complete, albeit somewhat shorter than what you may expect. Most of the recipes are difficult and many of the recipes require a long time to prepare. And, the author states that fact clearly at the beginning of each recipe. On top of all this, the instructions for some of the long and difficult recipes are rather terse. Bras' recipe for the famous `La Buche de Noel' or Christmas Log is not much more than a single page of text plus a single hand-drawn illustration. Nick Malgieri's instructions for the same cake in `Perfect Pastry' takes at least two pages. Other presentations I have seen take longer, with many pictures.

This is not to say this is a `bad' book. Most of what this means is that the audience for this book may only be professional pastry chefs and very serious amateur foodies and bakers who like to experiment with unusual ingredients and unusual preparations, molds, and ingredients like acacia flowers and chicory. The combination of unusual ingredients, long prep times, and professional level skills means this book is not for the average bake sale matron. On the other hand, even if you are not a professional or even an active amateur baker, this book does offer a window into a world of desserts you may just not see outside of some very special shops in New York, San Francisco, Paris, Brussels, or Lyon... or in the Aubrac. In spite of the many long and difficult recipes, there are several, especially in the chapter `Basic Recipes' which will give the inventive pastry amateur a lot of interesting ideas. There are the usual recipes for frangipanes and Italian meringue, but there are also interesting recipes for Fouace Dough, caramelized phyllo leaves, and a short crust pastry dough with duck fat.

The chapter on fruit desserts offers a lot of interesting tarts with roasted fruits, nut creams, and quinquina (whatever that is). The chapter on pastries has interesting cake recipes, mousselines, pralines, and preparations with one of his favorite unusual ingredients, milk skin.

The chapter on ice cream may be more interesting than most books. Just be careful not to be taken in by the `instant' ice cream recipes. They are unusual in their use of whipped cream and fresh toasted bread crumb to get the fluff of ice cream, but they do require that the preparation spend several hours in the fridge and they also require the use of an ice cream maker.

The book requires several European ingredients such as black and blond sugar. I suspect blond sugar is what we would call light brown sugar and black sugar may be an especially dark `dark brown sugar', but the book does not clear that up for us Yanks. I was totally baffled when one recipe called for the cook to measure the relative density of sugar syrup. I know how this is done, but I have never seen a device for doing this in any kitchen supply source.

Recommended to professionals, adventuresome pastry hobbyists, and foodies bored with the average book on French cookery.

Make sure you get the first edition!

Tvede presents a good, intermediate-level overview of market trading from a trend-following perspective. He also describes several indicators which are useful in assessing the "temperature" of the trading environment. However, aside from the clarity of his writing and the logical development of his argument, he offers little which is new to the experienced market practitioner.
Also, please note that this book was published in two editions. The first edition successfully views the mechanics of trading through the emotional filters which affect our buy-sell decisions. The second edition is a complete rewrite which morphs the book into a nebulous psychology text that is only occasionally related to the trading process. You would be well-served to avoid this second edition! First edition - 4 stars; second edition - 1 star.

Excellent! Can be a classic

If somebody reads one book, makes minor revision and prints it, that's plagiarism. If he/she reads ten, that's scholarship. If the number goes to a hundred, it is mastership, my appreciation of the author and his masterpiece.
There are countless books on either history of the investment market, or trading psychology, or technical analysis. This book is a rare breed that incorporates several dimensions into one. Chart reading, with elaboration of four basic market rules (1. market is ahead 2. market is irrational 3. environment is chaotic 4. charts are self fulfilling) interrelated with different schools of psychological theories (Behaviorist, Gestalt, Cognitive, Psychoanalysis), form the stem of this beautiful book with vivid "green leaves" of writings on momentum, sizing, turning points.....
One great strength of it is that one does not need to know much about psychology to understand what the author tries to tell, because tables of examples are abundant to let you know when you have made specific mistakes. He does not teach you how to correct them, but it does lead the way of self improvement and really help to enlighten your trading style.
It should be in any serious trader's bookshelf for fast recollection of some important trading principles, a regular dosage for cleansing mental dirt accumulated throughout his/her harsh trading life.

Psychology textbook

The first part of this is an explaination of the various schools of psycology. Then he explains what ideas he draws from them. Though very interesting, you're shown possible explainations of market action, but not really shown how to understand which of those is working in the market at the moment. After all, isn't the study of psycology of trading supposed to give you an edge and help you figure out what people are doing or what they are "probably" about to do?
Later he goes into chart patterns and relates the material to chart formations. But nothing that is an improvement on similar discussions of the psycology of chart patterns we've all heard and read before.
As for one reviewer mentioning what is important in the markets, no where is M2 mentioned in the book.

A must have and must read for anyone who has suffered the death of a loved one.

Having recently lost our otherwise incredibly healthy and active son-in-law to sudden death from a heart attack, this book has proven to be a tremendous help, not only learning how to handle our grief, but to be better friends and parents to our daughter and her in-laws at this time of such sadness. It is an amazing tool to help process all the emotions and confusion that this circumstance has generated. Happily it was our grieving newly widowed daughter who suggested this wonderful book. Although it cannot deal with each and every type of loss, it covers such basic losses experienced with the death of a loved one in such simple-to-understand ways, and in such an organized presentation, as to allow the reader to internalize and universalize the tools offered to deal better with other griefs and losses experienced over a lifetime. It isn't "preachy" or clinical, but rather very naturally presented to the general public, with a depth of references to allow the reader to pursue more indepth study, should they so desire. Truly an amazing book. Many thanks to the author for her work for us!

If you don't have a good support system in place at work or home you ...

I lost my dad on Jan. 30th 2016 and my mom on Feb. 13th 2016. Although both were older and I knew death comes to all, I was not expecting it the way I had pictured it. Life and death has it's own time table. The book helped not only me but my daughter, whom my mom helped raise. The sudden loss of both left a huge hole in our lives and we had very little support except each other. I went back to work while trying to handle the estate, thinking that I was doing well. If you don't have a good support system in place at work or home you will crash at some point. As much as others expect us to "move" on, we need to allow ourselves as much time as needed. How to go on Living gives us the permission and guide lines to keep going and to heal in our own time.
My heart goes out to all of you that's lost a love one and is looking for help.

Very Informative

The most informative book I have read concerning the grieving process. I covers everything. It even has separate sections for the various losses such as the loss of a spouse, child, parent. It has helped me immensely in my own grieving process.
