About the Author
Wilfrid J. Harrington, OP, currently lectures at the Priory Institute and at the Church of Ireland Theological College, both in Dublin. An Irish Dominican and professor emeritus of the Milltown Institute of Theology and Philosophy in Dublin, he earned degrees in theology at the University of St. Thomas, Rome and in biblical studies at the Ecole Biblique, Jerusalem. Fr. Harrington's teaching and writing career spans more than half a century. He has published a number of books and articles in the biblical field, including Jesus Our Brother (Paulist Press 2010).

Revelation - A Theology of Hope

The distinguished scripture authority, Wilfrid Harrington presents a thorough and detailed commentary on the Book of Revelation. Although some read Revelation and find a glipse of perdition, Harrington reads Revelation and finds hope for all of humanity.
Jesus Christ, the Lamb, slain for our salvation, has come back to rescue, not to condemn. It is God's intention, and the Lamb's, that all will be saved!
Going line by line through the text of Revelation, Harrington explains how his underlying premise is derived. With scholarly attention to the original Greek text, Harrington constructs an understanding of Revelation that is filled with joy and hope for eternal life.
Harrington's work measures up nicely in comparison to the other volumes in the commentary series, Sacra Pagina. This volume is well worth the investment, particularly for the homilist, the teacher, the pastoral counselor or those attempting to help others understand the Book of Revelation.

Decent scholarship, heretical theology

Wilfrid Harrington, O.P. has written a scholarly analysis of the Book of Revelation, but his theology is heretical, and decidedly not Catholic.

For instance, Fr. Harrington denies the existence of Satan, stating, "Satan is a powerful symbol, representing the whole gamut of evil and its infectious presence in the human race".

What is more troubling, he seems to glowingly accept the teachings of his fellow Dominican, dissident theologian Edward Schillebeeckx. In an Excursus at the end of this book, Fr. Harrington states there will be Universal Salvation ("Universal salvation means that all human beings will finally be redeemed by God's gracious love"), and "There is no negative eschaton" (meaning there is no eternal hell). He agrees with Schillebeeckx's statement, "But there is no shadow kingdom of hell next to the eternally happy kingdom of God." Were there any confusion about his stance, Fr. Harrington states, "Humans, not God, have invented hell."

What these two theologians are telling us is that there will be no eternal hell, in direct opposition to the Gospels, and in direct opposition to the teachings of the Catholic Church.

While it would be pleasant to think that no matter what we do in this life, there will be no possibility of eternal damnation, this is not what Jesus Christ himself tells us in the Gospels.

I heartily agree that the Book of Revelation is indeed a message of God's love and mercy for us; it is also a Book about God's justice. We mock the Gospels if we deny the existence of Satan, and we deny God's just nature if we deny the existence of an eternal hell.

So, while his scholarship is decent, his dissident theology casts a pall (in the truest sense of the word) over this book.

To any Catholic, I would say "Let the reader beware".

Study of Revelation

The Sacra Pagina series on the New Testament is an outstanding reference work for any student of the New Testament. The book on Revelation is by Wilfred Harrington and Daniel Harrington. I was introduced to this series when I took a graduate level course in the New Testament. The professor recommended this series as excellent New Testament reference books. I lead a weekly bible discussion group and I have found this series to be of immense help. I am able to review Revelation line by line and receive the benefit of knowledgeable Catholic bible experts. I may not share the same views as the author on every passage but I can review his analysis and he also points me to other sources. I found Wilfred Harrington's views on universal salvation to be troubling. However, if you needed one book as a guide to Revelation this is it.

Doctor Pascal is the twentieth and final novel of the Rougon-Macquart series by �mile Zola, first published in June 1893 by Charpentier.
Zola's plan for the Rougon-Macquart novels was to show how heredity and environment worked on the members of one family over the course of the Second Empire. He wraps up his heredity theories in this novel. Le docteur Pascal is furthermore essentially a story about science versus faith. The novel begins in 1872, after the fall of the Second Empire and the end of the reign of Emperor Napoleon III. The title character, Pascal Rougon (b. 1813), is the son of Pierre and F�licit� Rougon, whose rise to power in the fictional town of Plassans is detailed in the first novel of the series La fortune des Rougon.
Pascal, a physician in Plassans for 30 years, has spent his life cataloging and chronicling the lives of his family based on his theories of heredity. Pascal believes that everyone's physical and mental health and development can be classified based on the interplay between innateness (reproduction of characteristics based in difference) and heredity (reproduction based in similarity). Using his own family as a case study, Pascal classifies the 30 descendants of his grandmother Adela�de Fouque (Tante Dide) based on this model.
Pascal has developed a serum he hopes will cure hereditary and nervous diseases (including consumption) and improve if not prolong life. His niece Clotilde sees Pascal's work as denying the omnipotence of God and as a prideful attempt to comprehend the unknowable. She encourages him to destroy his work, but he refuses. (Like other members of the family, Pascal is somewhat obsessive in the pursuit of his passion.) Pascal's explains his goal as a scientist as laying the groundwork for happiness and peace by seeking and uncovering the truth, which he believes lies in the science of heredity. After he shows her the Rougon-Macquart family tree and demonstrates his refusal to sugarcoat the family's acts, Clotilde begins to agree with him. Her love for him solidifies her faith in his theories and his lifelong work.
Clotilde and Pascal eventually begin a romance, much to the chagrin of his mother F�licit�. (She is less concerned about the incestuous nature of the relationship than by the fact that the two are living together out of wedlock.) F�licit� wants to keep the family secrets buried at any cost, including several family skeletons living nearby: her alcoholic brother-in-law Antoine Macquart and her centenarian mother-in-law Tante Dide. When Clotilde's brother Maxime asks Clotilde to come to Paris, F�licit� sees this as an opportunity to control Pascal and access his papers to destroy them.
Pascal suffers a series of heart attacks, and Clotilde is not able to return from Paris before he dies. F�licit� immediately burns all of Pascal's scholarly work and the documents she considers incriminating. The novel, and the entire 20-novel series, concludes with the birth of Pascal and Clotilde's son and the hope placed on him for the future of the family.

Grade 2–4—With its appealing illustrations and clever premise, this book puts a different twist on the notion of job hunting. When a classified ad appears in the newspaper for "a good-looking adult" wolf, Manny Wolf—a human—applies for the position. Many applicants respond to the ad, and Manny is hired to read through their letters and to reply. Thus begins his correspondence with famous and infamous wolves from folktales, myths, and fairy tales such as "Little Red Riding Hood," "The Three Little Pigs," "Peter and the Wolf," and even the female that raised Romulus and Remus. The illustrator depicts letters from those characters and Manny's written responses; the narrator then explains in which stories the wolves appear. It turns out that the original newspaper ad wasn't explicit enough. What was needed was "an animal who can't read and doesn't appear in a book," so that a documentary about endangered species can be compiled. The story ends with a spread of information on "Wolves and Their Relatives" and a map of the world showing the animals' range. The accomplished illustrations are entertaining and full of energy and differing perspectives. Older children familiar with the tales and able to handle the lengthy text will enjoy the book, and teachers might find it useful for creative-writing classes.—Maryann H. Manny Wolf, a man who looks a bit wolflike, takes a job screening employment applications from wolves for a company seeking to hire them. He sends replies to letters that say things like: “I CAN HUFF, I CAN PUFF, AND I CAN BLOW ANY HOUSE DOWN.” Children who know their folktales will understand why this applicant was turned down. References are also made to wolves in “Little Red Riding Hood,” “The Wolf and the Seven Little Kids,” the fables of both Aesop and LaFontaine, Peter and the Wolf, etc. The story's understated wit is magnified to high comedy in Cardon's dramatic, mixed-media illustrations. The final pages provide information and photos related to 10 actual “Wolves and Their Relatives” around the world. Machado, a Brazilian writer of more than 100 books, received the Hans Christian Andersen Award in 2000. This picture book is a welcome addition to the short list of her titles available in English in the U.S. Preschool-Grade 3. --Carolyn Phelan

Although Manny Wolf was more man than wolf, he still decided to respond to a job ad seeking a wolf. After all, he had the Wolf name, he understood the instructions about sending a CV and cover letter, and he really needed a job. It turns out that even though the company really did want an actual wolf, they still hired Manny. A large number of wolves had applied for the job, and the company needed someone to read and answer all their letters.

Not only did Manny have excellent writing skills, he also knew his wolves. So when the big bad wolves from various fairy tales and fables wrote seemingly innocent inquiries, Manny could see their cunning ways and reply accordingly. It took many such responses for Manny to figure out he was having trouble finding the perfect candidate because the job ad was too vague. Could he rectify the situation?

Wolf Wanted provides children with a humorous and somewhat unusual description of the job search process and the role of want ads. Although the book has mostly a tongue-in-cheek approach, it transitions rather quickly at the end to a more serious look at the endangerment of wolves around the world. Younger children may find this transition confusing, while older children should be able to get past this literary twist and appreciate the lessons both on job search and on wildlife preservation.

Paul Schuytema (Monmouth, IL) has been a professional game developer for over ten years and in that time spoke at the previous ten GDC conferences. He has produced and designed over twenty games. Schuytema wrote more than 200 professional articles and authored or co-authored over a dozen books. He teaches college-level creative writing and journalism, and he received the Governor¿s 2002 Entrepreneurial Success Award in Illinois. He is the primary scriptor for Magic Lantern.

Mark Manyen (Monmouth, IL) is the technical director for Magic Lantern and has directed the technology on more than 25 games. He incorporates Lua into Magic Lantern¿s J5 technology suite and creates all ¿Lua Glue¿ hooks into the J5 codebase.

amazingly insightful!

As a developer new to Lua, this book serves as a great introduction and reference guide. It started with the basics, explaining the history of Lua and what it was originally designed for. I was able to ramp up my Lua Development after reading this book.
For anyone looking to develop games with Lua, this book is a must have. I highly recommend it for everyone from the seasoned developer to the noob with aspirations to build games.

Hardly Worth the Price

The best thing about this book is that the CD contains an environment where you can script projects -- like the example game -- in Lua. The example game itself is not stellar. In fact, it ran very poorly on my PC, which is a new state-of-the-art game development system. The actual scripting presented in the book is not particularly elegant. That is, the title is written more from a hobbyist's perspective than the POV of a professional developer. In order to really learn Lua, you would be better off purchasing _Programming In Lua_ and talking to other Lua programmers on the Lua forums ([...]

Understanding Capitalism

This edition of "Capital" contains the original English translation of Volume One - and it is an excellent translation which I prefer to the one in the Penguin edition. (I do not understand why a previous reviewer made a comment about needing to speak French or German to read this edition.) The introduction by David McLellan is also quite good, although I think that McLellan is unfair in claiming that Marx was not concerned enough with issues such as gender inequality and ecology.

To many people Marxism is a dirty word because of its association with the bureaucratic tyranny of the Stalinist regimes of Russia, Eastern Europe, China etc. But these regimes had/have nothing to do with genuine Marxism, as anyone who reads this book will see. The so-called "communist" states were actually state capitalist systems controlled by a ruling class of bureaucrats who betrayed the aims of the 1917 Russian Revolution and turned on its head Marx's aim of a democratic workers' state and classless society.

Marx's humanism and democratic instincts shine out throughout this book. There are marvellous indictments of the alienating, exploitive and undemocratic nature of the capitalist system, as well as some remarkably vivid historical sections. But Marx's main aim in this book is not to set out a blueprint for a future socialist society, it is to lay bare the "law of motion" of the capitalist society we live in.

Marx shows that there are two key features of the capitalist system. Firstly, there is the fact that the capitalists make their profits by exploiting the working class. (The working class today includes ordinary white collar workers as well as manual workers.) As Marx writes, "Capital...vampire-like, only lives by sucking living labour..."

Secondly, there is the competition between rival capitalists which drives on the exploitation and which leads to the anarchy of the market system, with its booms, slumps and crises, as we are seeing today.

I particularly like how Marx shows that people are alienated under capitalism, in the sense of their work being turned into soulless degradation, and also in the sense of having lost control of their lives to something they themselves have created - capital. "As, in religion, man is governed by the products of his own brain, so in capitalist production, he is governed by the products of his own hand."

"Capital" is not an easy read, and it is best tackled after reading a modern introduction to Marxism. On Marxist economics, I would recommend either Joseph Choonara's "Unravelling Capitalism" or Chris Harman's "Zombie Capitalism". On Marxism as a whole, Alex Callinicos's "The Revolutionary Ideas of Karl Marx" is a brilliant starting point.

Wasn't an easy read but worth it!

To be honest it wasn't an easy read since this is not the usual book that I would choose, so I am glad that I chose the abridged instead of the original copy. I wasn't very familiar with Marxism and I found several of his thoughts jaw dropping especially given the fact that it was written 150 years ago. It made me rethink what I have been taught and practiced. I wouldn't recommend to people who want to criticize his work just because he is considered as communist. Communism or extreme communism has been proved that it doesn't really work throughout history. It might be better to read the book with the perspective of which ideas can be tolerated into capitalism in order to make it more reasonable. However, I didn't like his writing style or his examples which made a good portion of the book tedious. This abridged version did a great job of keeping his writing style but what I really wanted was a more concise without redundancy. But I talked to a person who said that it's his writing style that make the book even more valuable. So I keep it as a personal opinion. If you are reading alone I highly recommend Youtube video of David Harvey 'reading karl marx's Capital with David Harvey'. I probably would have stopped reading chapter one without it. However if somebody rewrite his book in a more concise and with more plain English I would prefer that.

Ready to use CookBook

To my best knowledge, the well-written book gives for the first time a comprehensive treatment of spice and switched-mode power supplies (SMPS's). A short history of modelling techniques is discussed with references to relevant literature; also some tricks to speed up a simulation are given. The main part of the book consists of the small-signal (averaged) and transient models for the most common converters, such as buck, boost, flyback, forward, half-bridge, etc.; all illustrated by examples. Most of the examples are available in electronic format on the accompanying CD-ROM; the reader can start quite quickly with experimenting with the templates. Unfortunately, extracting the models from IsSpice (which we use) is quite cumbersome, since first the demo version has to be installed before the models are available. This demo version conflicts with the commercial version (although Intusoft gives a solution on their web-site). In a next release it would be very helpful to distribute the models separately on the CD (or web?). Nevertheless, the book is according to my opinion very useful for people working in the field of SMPS's. Calculating the closed-loop response and stability analysis is now really easy. Comprehensive, easy to read. Good work.

Not for Beginners

I can understand why many people who bought this book thinking that it would be usefull for learning how to use SPICE or learning how to design power supplies were dissappointed. Basso is definitely not for beginners. The book assumes you have a fundamental knowledge of SPICE and electronics. He provides a generous list of papers and books which the beginner can use to come up to speed on the various complex principals of power supply design.

If you are a working professional in power electronics, buy this book. Basso gives away a lot of very accurate cookbook designs that can be easily "tweaked" to fit any design requirement. The circuits provided in this book made it very easy for me to make a complete working SPICE model of my design in just a few hours.

Learn the fundamentals about power electronics and SPICE, then buy this book.

SPICE Cookbook that really cooks

This is a complete Power Supply Designers Toolkit/cookbook with ready to run simulation templates for optimun solutions to loop stabilization. There is just enought backgrown information for understanding the models derivation. The attached CD-ROM contains all the models necessary for fast solutions. I particually liked the spreadsheet for solving loop components values using K Factor analysis. I don't know how many times in the last 20 years that I could have used this solver. The real power of this book is access to the author thru his web site. I just e-mailed him my faulty file and he quickly told me how to fix my mistakes. It's like having an expert on call. The author does a nice job of tying in other well known experts in the field and using their expertise to make this book a complete study in the art of Power Supply loop design.

Should have read first

Not having read anything by this author, I began reading this series without quite knowing what to expect. I had saved them all to read for an upcoming vacation, however, couldn't stand the temptation and began to read.... and read, I did! Once I started, I could not stop - from one book to the other.

This is a refreshingly written series of the Highlander Clans in Scotland. Each book has approximatly three sets of characters it focuses on, yet still interweaves others from past groups into the next. It slowly progresses through three generations. I could have kept on reading!

I enjoyed the way this author mixed the characters and the love stories. I enjoyed the fact that romance & love could be found without embarassing details. I also, liked how each title had a number in the series on it, making it easy to follow from one to the next.

When I first bought the other books, I missed this one in the group, so I didn't read it until last. It should be read first, because it gives the back ground of how this particular clan got started.

Although not a major literary piece, this group of books is thoroughly enjoyable and filled with intersting details of the time period. For this reason, I have given them ALL a five star rating!

As a "saga" I thought this book was just ok, and easy to read.

As a "romance", this book was a big disappointment. The two g r a d u a l l y and s l o w l y, fall in love as teenagers. The day they admit their love, he is kidnapped and sold into slavery. The next 2+ years is about him being a slave, nothing about her life.

the book description states someone is trying to kill the beloved laird. Unfortunately, the author lets you know from the start who that someone is. And its all talk and "plans", I dont remember an actual attempt being made on his life. There was absolutely no mystery or intrigue.

would I read this one again? No

One of my favorite authors!

I read this after I had read all the rest of her Highlander series. It just proved to be another great book. I am a big fan of Marti's, and devour any of her Highlander books. I love the fact that they capture my attention, but are clean so I don't have to worry about any smut throwing me a curve ball when I'm least expecting it. As soon as I find out that there's another book in this series, I purchase it and am in book heaven.
