You Heard it From the Man

You've heard the line, "sticking it to the man." Well, Robert Townsend was the man. As a top executive at Avis, Hertz, and American Express his good nature and not-so-common sense saved these companies. This is an anthology book with a series of moral lessons for managers everywhere---read it! Read his second book too: "Further Up the Organization." In the second book, he recounts how as an executive at American Express he was rebuffed by an accountant. He explained that he needed to buy one of those new fangled (it was the 70's) calculators for an accounts manager. He then added that the calculator would pay for itself in minutes with what it would save AMEX. Without blinking, the accountant said, "If it's not in your budget, you can't have it." Townsend just said, "Oh," and started writing a memo. After a few minutes, he handed it to the accountant. He said,"Sign here." The accountant looked at it and exclaimed,"This is your resignation! I'm not signing that." Townsend said, "Yes you are." Then, he said, "When I resign I am going to hand this memo to my boss, the CEO. He's going to want to know why I resigned and I want to tell him." The accountant turned gray. Townsend got his calculator. You will find amusing and interesting stories in both books. What he said then rings true today. If only we had executives like him today. Instead, we have people like Lay, Skilling, and Fastow: only out for themselves, with egos the size of the mansions they aspire to own.

A classic!

This is a 30 year old classic I recently re-read for the 3rd time. It has logical and pragmatic approaches in bite size messages that remain timely.

Robert Townsend established himself and his company as the one "who tried harder" to meet customer needs. This book is an ABC manual of common sense business strategies beginning with Advertising and ending with Wearing out one's Welcome. He tackles nepotism, useless meetings, egos, in house politics, accountability and much more.

Townsend co-authored work with Tom Peters later in his career and one can see the influences they shared and believe in.

An excellent read- a classic!

A heartwarming inspiration for people with the courage to remake organizations from the inside out!

A brilliant, heartwarming book, especially if you've been wondering why companies never seem to behave as well as, in your childish expectations, you had always thought they would...

Townsend writes in the 1960s, after having turned around first the credit card division of American Express and then the whole company Avis Rent-a-Car, as in "We're No. 2 -- We Try Harder." If you were around then, you remember that Avis was the Rodney Dangerfield of service companies ("I can't get no respect") that turned into a giant-killer eating Hertz's lunch (to mix at least two metaphors) under Townsend's skillful direction.

The book contains several handfuls of short vignettes -- prescriptions on a number of topics, from a few sentences to a few pages long, for what he thinks you should do if you run your own company, and why. Taken together, they describe a vision of corporate life lived honorably and joyfully, to the benefit of all -- stockholders, customers, employees and the community at large. And it all sounds so simple! You read what he says about the photocopier, for example (did you know that the most important job in doing a late night deal may be running the photocopier, which is why the CEO will do it if there's no one else available?), or about locating your headquarters (Mars?, not quite, but there's an influence there!), and you say, "hey, *I* could do that if I were running a company, and it sure would make things better!" From how to create advertising (Avis had only half the resources of Hertz, so they figured they had to buy advertising with more than twice the impact in order to beat their competition) to how *not* to structure the executive committee, Townsend writes brilliantly funny exposes of how corporations usually work and of the obvious alternatives that, once pointed out, sound convincing and empowering. And he's not just guessing; he did all these things, and Wall Street rewarded the corporations that winningly hired him to do so.

If you're feeling down, disheartened, or unsure that work life will ever make you proud or happy, then Townsend's humorously-told stories of an insightful pruning of overweight corporations into trim fighting firms -- firms which actually respect people, both without and within -- may make your year.

Can't recommend it highly enough. Deserves to be on every well-intentioned leader's bookshelf.
