Have you ever wondered why everyone else is hearing from God about what they should do and what they should be when they grow up? What if what we've been taught about God's individual will is unbiblical? What if there is another way, the way of wisdom, to look at things and make decisions? Friesen opens up God's Word and shows readers why the traditional view on individual will as wrong as well as how we can know God in a new way and learn to make decisions based on the freedom and revelation already available to us. A must-read.

God's sovereign will is indiscernible.

If you read some of the reviews of the newer edition of this book you might think the author does not believe in meticulous providence. I guess I thought that when I bought the book since it was quoted favorably in "Gospel of Coincidence" but for all the fundie Calvinists out there they need to take a few deep breaths and read the entire book - including the chapters near the end about God's sovereign will - before they write a review. Friesen does believe God has a very precise will for everyone's life and everything happens exactly as God wills it. The only thing he denies is that we can know God's sovereign will ahead of time; we can know his moral will but not his sovereign will. Personally I lean more toward Greg Boyd's "Is God to Blame" but even in that book Boyd accepts God leading through our feelings and impressions. So in some ways this book could be helpful even for some open theists out there (just ignore the chapters on Calvinistic sovereignty). FYI: I'm coming at this from a general providence, open future - Christians can make real mistakes that God in no way wanted / willed them to make - point of view.

About the Author

Alan A. A. Donovan is a member of Google’s Go team in New York. He holds computer science degrees from Cambridge and MIT and has been programming in industry since 1996. Since 2005, he has worked at Google on infrastructure projects and was the co-designer of its proprietary build system, Blaze. He has built many libraries and tools for static analysis of Go programs, including oracle, godoc -analysis, eg, and gorename.

Brian W. Kernighan is a professor in the Computer Science Department at Princeton University. He was a member of technical staff in the Computing Science Research Center at Bell Labs from 1969 until 2000, where he worked on languages and tools for Unix. He is the co-author of several books, including The C Programming Language, Second Edition (Prentice Hall, 1988), and The Practice of Programming (Addison-Wesley, 1999).

Thorough coverage; excellent examples; but maybe not essential

TL;DR

If you're looking to buy a comprehensive text on Go, "The Go Programming Language" is an excellent choice. But with so many free e-book introductions to Go, do you really need it? Maybe, but maybe not.

OVERVIEW

The authors "assume that you have programmed in one or more other languages" and thus "won't spell out everything as if for a total beginner". Yet the book weighs in at a hefty 380 pages (over 100 pages more than my venerable 1988 K&R 2nd edition).

Is it better than the free 50-page "Little Go Book", or the free 160-page "Introduction to Programming in Go" or even the freely-available 80-page Go Language Specification itself? Yes, certainly. But is it two or three or four times as good? I don't think so.

So is "The Go Programming Language" worth the cost to read in both dollars *and* time? It depends on how you learn, how much you already know, and whether, for you, the good parts outweigh the bad.

THE GOOD PARTS

Chapter 1 ("Tutorial") sets the stage for much of what is excellent about this book: fabulous examples. Beyond the obligatory "Hello World", it presents a quick look at several simplified "real world" examples, including command line text filtering, image generation/animation, URL fetching and serving a web page.

The rest of the book follows this same pattern. Chapters typically present several different code examples, most of which do real things rather than just consist of toy code. They include exercises (which I didn't do), that would be good for a course or for someone who learns best by doing structured exercises. The examples are enough to serve as a starting "cookbook" for many real-world tasks.

I also found the explanations of struct embedding and composition to be excellent. Some concepts gelled much better for me than they had from other texts and even from my own coding to date. I had the same experience in the chapter on concurrency with channels. I was pleased that things so idiosyncratic to Go were some of the best parts of the book.

THE BAD PARTS

Sadly, the book's coverage of the standard library is haphazard. On the one hand, the many real world code examples gave opportunities to introduce parts of the standard library naturally throughout. Unfortunately, that also means there's no comprehensive coverage of the standard library itself, which is surprising given that it's one of great strengths of the language.

The most glaring example of this ad hoc approach was finding a section on text and HTML templating oddly dropped in at the end of Chapter 4 ("Composite Types"). It was as if they really wanted to cover those packages and -- without a chapter dedicated to the standard library -- had nowhere else to put it.

As mentioned previously, the book is long and rather dense. It's not a quick read. Worse, the authors have a habit of burying important points or cautions in the middle of a wall of text and code examples. The lack of cutesy caution icons or call-out boxes for these tidbits (as would be found in more informally-styled books) really hurts skim-ability.

THE MIXED PARTS

As great as the examples were, I found some aspects disturbing. First, in some cases, implementation details were omitted from the text -- the reader is expected to download the source to see the full example. I would have preferred complete, if less ambitious, examples instead.

In other cases -- particularly in the sections on concurrency -- the examples are presented in a progression of one or more complete "wrong" examples of how not to do things before an example of the "right" way to do things. This approach is a good teaching method, but it adds substantially to the length of the text -- you have to grok a lot more code to parse out the differences between the examples.

The other interesting observation I had was that in many cases, the examples omit error handling for brevity. Since the verbosity of Go code error handling is a frequent criticism of the language, omitting it seemed somehow disingenuous.

SUMMARY

If you have the money and patience and you like deep dives and real, working examples and exercises, this book is an excellent choice. If you prefer to skim or dabble, or just want a handy reference text, there are probably better options.

Excellent book. It did what the others didn't

I tried another Go book, before tossing it aside in favor of this one. Excellent book. It did what the others didn't: it explained "why". Go is a weird language. So if the reasoning behind the decisions is left out, then the language is hard to swallow. But with proper explanation of the reasoning, one can see the wisdom of Go and forgive some of its odd design and syntax decisions.

Real single people – over 100 million of them in the U.S. alone – are getting the message that science has shown that their lives are second rate. It hasn't and they aren't. In the past few years, several important studies and review papers have been published that make it clearer than it has ever been before that we have been misled about the supposed benefits of getting married. I have discussed those publications in several of the brief chapters in this book, many of which were posts that first appeared on my "Living Single" blog at Psychology Today or my "Single at Heart" blog at Psych Central. The most important chapter, I think, is Chapter 2, "No study has ever shown that getting married makes people happier or healthier – and no study ever will." In it, I make the case more thoroughly and forcefully than ever before. In fact, I think that chapter is so significant that I have published it as a stand-alone book, The Science of Marriage: What We Know That Just Isn't So. The first chapter in this book, "Living single: Lightening up those dark, dopey myths," is a broad-ranging discussion of the psychology of single life. In it, I challenge the pervasive claims about the benefits of marriage, but that is just a part of the discussion. The chapter originally appeared in Cupach and Spitzer's edited volume, The Dark Side of Personal Relationships II. As with most academic volumes, it is very expensive. Now interested readers can access my chapter in this much more affordable book. Part I of Marriage vs. Single Life: How Science and the Media Got It So Wrong includes just those two substantial chapters. The second chapter was originally written for fellow academics and some sections are fairly detailed. This excellent book by Bella DePaulo, Ph.D. shatters so many myths regarding marriage and it's glorification in our society. Myths like "Married people live longer" and "Married people are happier with life than singles" are completely exposed by Dr. DePaulo's world class research. The book is easy to read even though much of it is based on academic studies. Single people are definitely discriminated against in our world. This book should be discussed on every major news story that glorifies marriage and stigmatizes single people. Highly recommended.

Destined to be an occult classic

It is appropriate that an important contribution to occult literature is to be found in a slim volume with an unassuming and quirky title.

The author presents sufficient theory and practice that will allow even a neophyte to access in a reasonably safe and suprisingly convenient manner the astral realms. Quite an accomplishment. But this is by no means only a book for beginners. Advanced practitioners (assuming they have an open mind) will find a great deal to ponder and benefit from in this volume. Anyone serious about magickal practice or even just magickal theory should acquire this book and consider its contents carefully. They will be well repaid for their efforts.

Aleister Crowley was the baddest of bad boys. He made great advancements in the magickal realm while sending shock waves through the clubby and largely ineffectual grade system of traditional occult fraternities, It is no small irony that the magickal orders that profess to be Thelemic are as full of pretentious poseurs as those that Crowley blasted with his extraordinary talent and application. I suspect that his book will not be well liked by those in authority in Crowleyian magickal orders. The author reveals too many secrets for comfort. I believe Crowley would have approved of this book that captures the spirit of authentic Thelemic magickal theory and practice.

If your interest is strictly in the Ouija Board itself, the 1st 2 chapters will give you the history of the Board, the Game and it's media press. But this book is really about applying consistent control in all forms of divination to focus the type of Spirit called. Rather than repeat well worn (and well published) truisms, the author seems to have concentrated on what Aleister Crowley and his disciples actually DID, whether it was thru Tarot, Astrology, Ceremonial Magick or Enochian. Occult forces viewed on the physical plane

This book provides quite classical information on the little know bit about the beast himself, Aleister Crowley. It applies basic information from the banishing ritual and the information in his pages to a quite interesting experience that can be had by not only the highest ceremonial magician's. The author pulls together a good amount of information about this board and the way it was used by one of the greatest occultists of all time. The book is defiantly worth more then a simple pick up at a library as it can be useful for review long after the first read.

A fun and easy read for kids

STINK AND THE INCREDIBLE SUPER-GALACTIC JAWBREAKER is the second story centered on Judy Moody's younger brother Stink.

Stink Moody buys a huge jawbreaker at the candy store and sucks on it until his tongue is as blue as a skink. When the jawbreaker doesn't break his jaw, he writes a letter of complaint to the candy company. Much to his surprise, he receives a 10-pound box of jawbreakers in return. Stink is so excited that he begins a letter-writing campaign to see if he can get more free stuff.

But Stink is so preoccupied with letter writing that he hardly notices that his best friend, Webster, is mad at him. It takes Stink a while to figure out why Webster is so angry. Could it have something to do with the crumpled envelope he finds? Will he be able to patch things up with his friend? It will take a little creativity.

Megan McDonald is the author of the popular Judy Moody series as well as STINK: The Incredible Shrinking Kid. She got the idea for Stink's latest adventure by watching two kids in the candy section of the grocery store. They were in awe of giant, confetti-flecked jawbreakers. McDonald knew Stink would want one.

STINK AND THE INCREDIBLE SUPER-GALACTIC JAWBREAKER is a chapter book that young kids can really sink their teeth into. As an added bonus, the author has scattered idioms throughout the book. And at the end of the story is a list of idioms that the reader can hunt for.

Hi my name is Connor Z. and I think that Stink and the Super Galactic Jawbreaker by Megan McDonald is an awesome humor book! It's about a kid that has a jawbreaker. He gets mad because something happens to his jawbreaker. I am not going to tell you any more but I will tell you your kids will "love it"! It's good for grades 2 and 3 so go buy it!!!!!!

Great Bedtime Reading!

This is just what a kid would do if he figured out that complaining would get him free stuff! His parents are smart enough to control the situation, and Stink learns a good lesson. My grandson loved it. Great bedtime reading!
