Just in time for FCC mmW deliberation, a comprehensive textbook

Just as FCC opens the issue of mobile use in the millimeter (mmW) wave region with the NOI in Docket 14-177, we have the 1st major text book on the technology involved.

In some ways this book is reminiscent of the pioneering 1976 publication of Robert Dixon’s Spread Spectrum Systems with Commercial Applications. At the time Dixon’s book was published there were published articles on most aspects of spread spectrum/CDMA technology, but they were scattered other a lot of different journals, often with different jargon, nomenclatures, and symbology in equations. While Dixon had few equations, he tied all the concepts together in a single approachable book. Similarly, but at a higher technical level, this book ties together its subject matter in a consistent way from a variety of sources, although in this case the authors are themselves major pioneers themselves in this technology.

The book deals with mobile millimeter wave systems, focusing on base station/mobile uplinks and downlinks. There is little specifically on fixed systems although much of the content is application to both fixed and mobile.

But the people who have to draft comments in Docket 14-177 and those who will be designing mmW mobile systems needs not be concerned absence of information on fixed or satellite systems. Within its prime subject matter of CMRS uplinks/downlinks it ties together for the first time information in disparate issues such as

•multipath mobile mmW propagation,
•atmospheric effects
•antenna technology including adaptive antenna technology to overcome the multipath,
•mmW device technology, and
•high level design issues

It is a major contribution in the mobile area. I hope the next edition deals with fixed issues also, although much of the content is applicable to both.

The new standard reference in the exploding field of 5G wireless

High Frequency wireless (millimeter wave) can deliver speeds well into the gigabits. At millimeter wavelengths you can aggregate hundreds of MHz of spectrum compared to the 20 MHz typical of today's wireless networks. High frequency antennas are very small, so it's practical to put 50 of them on a chip for massive MIMO.

Rappaport, Heath and colleagues are world leaders in research in millimeter wave high frequencies and MIMO. Rappaport's NYU Wireless Center has been sending teams out to get empirical data on frequencies like 28 GHz. They are testing in two of the toughest locations for a wireless network: Manhattan and Downtown Brooklyn. Heath at the University of Texas built one of the first MU MIMO testbeds.

With literally $billions going into 5G wireless research you need the latest information and best sources. Many of the claims in traditional wireless textbooks are not proving out in empirical testing. This book is current & well-informed and likely to be the standard for years if the authors' issue regular updates. It's a technical book and not easy reading for non-engineers but the style is clear and the explanations well written.

For the record, I'm a technology writer who has interviewed two of the authors. Rappaport was part of a webinar I did fpr the Marconi Society.

Like the previous "Wireless Communications

Like the previous "Wireless Communications: Principles and Practice" by the same author, these two books are very very great (the most recommended) for graduate students, engineers, researchers ... in Wireless Communication. I love the most is that the author explains everything in a clear, systematic manner, and visions/suggestion how this field will be in the future... so many people can understand (not only professors).

However, like me, many people after graduated (Bachelor, Master, Ph.D.) in this field, then working in industry. So I am looking for books which more practical, implementation (Signal Processing, Hardware, Circuit, RF....). Since the author has a super broad experiences, working in both academy and industry, I hope the author write books: interdisciplinary from principles of wireless to hardware implementation, System on Chip, antenna on chip... That would help many people.

A Beautiful Edition of Longchenpa's Classic

This is the first English translation of Longchenpa's seminal "Precious Treasury of Basic Space" that has been done and published by a Tibetan lama. And even though I'm tempted to read it in comparison to the other versions currently available (Barron and Dowman translations) I feel it is much better to approach it with fresh eyes and heart. And I find I like it very much!

All three texts in this book are presented in both the Tibetan (on one side of the page) along with the English translation. The bulk is Longchenpa's text (p. 30-161), but it is nicely framed with a prayer of invocation "Calling the Lama from Afar", by Chatral Rinpoche, at the start (p. 16-27), and a short guru yoga sadhana by Jigme Lingpa at the end (p. 164-177). Also included are the brief preface and forward, and the very detailed glossary (p. 179-210) and endnotes (p. 211-216).

There are a couple of things I really like about this Vajra Books edition - besides the way it is presented with quality layout and binding - they are the lineage picture on p.13 which shows a thangka of the author's 16 teachers with realistic smiling portraits, and the complete simplicity of the translation.

As this most wonderful of Longchenpa's works begins...

"Without searching or striving is the simply natural expanse,
Primordially pervasive and sublime - listen, I will elucidate.
The spontaneously accomplished expanse is the basis for the origination of everything.
Its essence is empty, and its nature is unobstructed,
So that nothing exists, but everything is manifest.
From the expanse of the three kayas, samsara and nirvana are self-arising,
But not moved from space, the nature of phenomena, the field of bliss.
In the sky-like continuum, the unchanging great expanse of mind itself,
Intermittent play, the miraculous expanse of compassion,
Is nothing other than adornment of space...."

Compelling Ancient Writings Poetically Translated

Here is a work that will leave you feeling you have been in the presence of great masters, in awe yet uncertain what has been said. It’s as if listening to a series of great arias as the authors climb to the greatest heights. There are three distinct sections, by three authors, all of them famous in the Dzogchen tradition of Buddhism. The three are Chatralwa Sangye Dorie (In the first section; Calling the Lama from Afar), Longchen Rabjam commonly called Longchenpa (In the second section; The Precious Treasury of Phenomenal Space), and Jingme Lingpa (In the third section; The Heart Essence of the Great Expanse). The first appears a cry for help to escape the suffering of samsara, the second a path into the ultimate reality, the third resting in that reality itself. Here is described what some call the highest practice, Ati.

Don’t start with this book, expecting to come away with an understanding of Dzogchen practice. There are other places to begin that quest. Here you must simply imbibe and let the senses respond. That’s right, simply listen, and after a first reading you may find yourself saying, I’m not sure what I just experienced, but it has left me in awe and with a lingering sense of bliss.

Glossary and footnotes seem a distraction, like trying to read the program in a dark theatre during a great performance. That’s why this book should be read more than once. At first enjoy the performance, and then try to figure it out if you must. Here is a work that in its very nature cries out to be experienced over and over, and then perhaps understood, but even then only on a non-intellectual basis. The text itself is 162 pages, but that number is cut in half by the original Tibetan set opposite the English. Savor the 81 pages of poetic translation. Compassionate mind?

A valuable anthology of seminal Dzogchen scriptures. I only have one criticism and that is Rinpoche's translation of the word "bodhicitta" (byang chub sems). He translates it "compassionate mind", which is far away from the meaning of the word "bodhicitta" which literally means "mind of enlightenment", and no closer to the Tibetan form, byang chub sems, which literally means "pure and total mind".

How does Rinpoche come to translate "mind of enlightenment" and "pure and total mind" as "compassionate mind"? It's as if he were translating a completely different word. Even worse, he does not even list "compassionate mind" in the glossary, to point out that "compassionate mind" is his interpretive translation of "bodhicitta" (byang chub sems).

I am a firm believer in the doctrine of "translate the word, not your personal interpretation of the word". When translating words, one ought to translate the word itself, not your own fanciful interpretation. Otherwise it is not translation, it is original composition which is at best paraphrasing of the source text. Okay, you may say that this is not so, because the Tibetan translates "bodhi", enlightenment, as "byang chub", pure and total. However, there are two points: one, Tibetan did not have a word for "bodhi", enlightenment, so they came up with "byang chub". Second, when the India scriptures were first translated in the 8th century, all the translated words were standardised and set for the future across the entire canons. Therefore, for example, for all of Tibetan Buddhism, "bodhi" would be "byang chub", and "bodhicitta" "byang chub sems". However, in English translation it is nothing like that. There are no standardised translations. Every individual translator does his own individual thing. In short, "compassionate mind" is the wrong translation of "bodhicitta", in my opinion. Remember, of course, though, that English is not Rinpoche's first language. Still, the translation must be either "mind of enlightenment", "mind of awakening", or "pure and total mind". That is what the word is. The word is not "compassionate mind".

That is simply the wrong translation.

About the Author

Susan Schwake is an artist, art educator, author, and curator. Her passion for teaching art for more than 20 years has found her working in many diverse settings, as well as her own art school, which operates inconjunction with their gallery and design firm in New Hampshire, called artstream.

Susan exhibits her own artwork in galleries in the United States and Europe. To date, she has curated over 100 compelling contemporary exhibitions in her own gallery with hundreds of national and international artists' work. Susan has worked with many corporations installing original artwork from the gallery's stable of artists.

In keeping with her passion for art and teaching, Susan has offered, and continues to offer, workshops and programs to parents, teachers at universities, art studios, community organization, public and private schools, and most recently online with e-courses in teacher training, painting, printmaking and mixed media.

Rainer Schwake is a versatile and talented media designer holding a masters degree in graphic design. His photography has been used in hundreds of business- and arts-related design works for print and websites. He is co-owner of artstream studios (www.artstreamstudios.com) and lives with his wife, Susan, in Rochester, NH.

Homeschooler's dream!

Homeschooling parents, Art Lab for Kids is exactly what you are looking for! With 52 different labs, your art curriculum for the year is done for you! I especially like the way the contemporary artists' works are juxtaposed with the artwork of children. We can teach our children technique (=having fun!) while simultaneously introducing them to artists (=learning!)...experiential learning at its best!

for homeschoolers, school teachers, and parents... not so much art teachers

I have mixed feelings about this book. I can't say it's bad, because I've taught 95% of the projects before. they're great projects! But as an artist and art instructor, I've seen kids do more than what is in this book (for some of the projects). Some of the projects are very simple things you could find over the internet. Some are things you do in elementary school. It's got a broad mix of really cool projects with a lot of potential, and really dull projects that I know kids don't really respond to very well.

However, I did find three or four projects that are pretty cool, that I'm definitely implementing aspects of in my extended camp this summer!

That being said, this book is great for students who want to do art but don't have any kind of local art class institution, teachers who are looking for a good collection to fit a wide age range, and maybe homeschool parents who want their kids to have art but don't know where to start.

Kids art class teacher? not so much. You probably already know them.

Art For All!

I just purchased a copy of this book and it is terrific for artists of all ages! As a former elementary school teacher and budding artist as well, I found this book to be well laid out and easy to use. The best part is that each of the 52 "labs" are stand alone, following the first unit which lays out how to get started and what is necessary for "setting the stage for creativity". All of the 52 projects begin with a list of needed materials followed by clear steps and accompanying photos. Each lab concludes with an example of professional artists' work using that medium. The photos are clear and beautifully laid out. The emphasis is on individual expression and artistic exploration. This colorful book is useful for parents, homeschoolers, and budding artists (like me!)of all ages, who may be interested in exploring drawing, painting, printmaking, paper and mixed media art projects. Bravo!

Robert M. Veatch, Ph.D., is Professor of Medical Ethics and former director of the Kennedy Institute of Ethics, Georgetown University, where he is also professor of philosophy and adjunct professor in the medical school. He has taught medical ethics at Georgetown, Columbia College of Physicians and Surgeons, Union College, and St. George's University School of Medicine. He was formerly Associate for Medical Ethics at the Hastings Center and is a registered pharmacist.

Circular Arguments of the Topic of Bioethics

This book briefly covers many topics relating to bioethics in a manner in which it can be used as a textbook or a book for informational enjoyment. The best aspect of the book is its medical cases; these give real-life examples of the topics discussed so that the arguments and rationale are not so confusing. As a college student, I found it very helpful because it covered a broad range of ethical topics, including abortion, euthanasia, etc.
Although the book was informative, the arguments were sometimes unclear. I understand that bioethics is a field of endless circular arguments, but the manner in which the topics were presented was sometimes difficult to understand. Some case examples were used but I think more would have been quite helpful. Whollly, the book served its purpose for me as being an introduction to bioethics, and it includes glossaries after every chapter to look up terms used in the text.

The story that sets me apart begins spring, sophomore year of high school.... This was the year I was violently raped of my virginity by my best friend's older brother in their secluded basement. This memoir documents my nine year silent struggle while I attempted to reconcile this traumatic event and simultaneously seek enlightenment. Excited to continue to read

I read the several pages that Amazon allows you to read to preview the book. Im sold! Just purchased my copy. One of those beautifully written, true to life books that make you think about your own struggles, and the hidden struggles of others. We all go through them and this book reinforces the strength of one of my favorite quotes, "Be kinder the necessary because everyone you meet is fighting some kind of battle". Thanks for the great read that helps open up our eyes to the important things in life.

Courageous, passionate and beautiful

I read this book cover to cover in one sitting because I was so lost in her world. Her diary entries flip between the dark soul searching exploration that so many young people experience and the brilliantly bright soul-appeasing feelings of yoga and enlightenment. The transitions are stark and you feel connected to the author and her inner torment. Beautifully written with courage, passion and intelligence.

About the Author

Garry Martin, a native Manitoban, attended Colorado College on a hockey scholarship, where he received the BA degree. He then attended Arizona State University for the MA and PhD degrees. Garry returned to Manitoba in 1966 and taught in the Department of Psychology at the University of Manitoba until his retirement at the end of 2008. He is currently a Distinguished Professor Emeritus at the U of M, and he continues to supervise graduate students, teach part-time, and write and publish. He has co-authored or co-edited 8 books and over 150 journal articles on various areas in behavioral psychology. His book, Behavior Modification: What It Is and How to Do It, with Dr. Joseph Pear, first published in 1978, is used as a primary text at many universities in 14 countries and various editions have been translated into Spanish, Italian, Portuguese, Chinese, and Korean. His research on behavioral training technologies for improving the quality of life of people with developmental disabilities and children with autism has been supported continuously by the Medical Research Council of Canada, and now the Canadian Institutes of Health Research for the past 32 years. He has been an invited speaker at numerous national and international conferences around the world. He has supervised 38 Masters theses, and 32 PhD theses at the University of Manitoba, and has received numerous honors and awards, including induction into the Royal Society of Canada. At the 2010 Annual Convention of the Canadian Psychological Association, Garry received the CPA Education and Training Award, the most prestigious education and training award the discipline confers in Canada.

Dr. Joseph J. Pear, Professor of Psychology at the University of Manitoba, received the B.S. degree from the University of Maryland and the M.A. and Ph.D. degrees from The Ohio State University. A fellow of Division 6 (Behavioral Neuroscience and Comparative Psychology) and Division 25 (Behavior Analysis) of the American Psychological Association, Dr. Pear has done both basic and applied research. His early applied work was with children with developmental disabilities at the St. Amant Centre, where he founded the Behaviour Modification Unit (now the Psychology Department) in the early 1970s. More recently, he developed Computer-Aided Personal System of Instruction (CAPSI), an instructional program based on the Keller Plan. CAPSI is an award winning program that is being used to teach a number of courses at University of Manitoba and at several other universities in Canada and the United States. It is also a research tool that Dr. Pear and his graduate students use to research the teaching and learning dimensions of university education. Dr. Pear has also done basic research with pigeons and fish using a tracking system that he developed. In addition to Behavior Modification: What It Is and How to Do It with Dr. Garry Martin, Dr. Pear has written two other books: The Science of Learning and A Historical and Contemporary Look at Psychological Systems. He has also written numerous research articles and two encyclopedia articles: “Psychological Systems” in The Corsini Encyclopedia of Psychology (Fourth Edition) and “Physiological Homeostasis and Learning” in Encyclopedia of the Sciences of Learning. He has received awards for Outstanding Contribution to Behaviour Analysis in Manitoba and for Innovative Excellence in Teaching, Learning, and Technology. He also received the Fred S. Keller Behavioral Education Award for Distinguished Contributions to Education.

Textbook, But Not

I used this book as a special education undergraduate. I found it contained all of the essential information in a format that was not bogged down with technical language. I have since loaned the book to several parents who found its information useful and its style easy and unintimidating. It is full of common, everyday examples in order to help one transition from the theoretical to the concrete.

A practical book that works

There is a ton of usable information in this book. The problem is getting past the jargon and text book manner in which it is written. It really is more for university students than the lay person. Keep in mind that it is a text book for 2 consecutive psychology semesters. So, if the answers do not jump out at you, then do not get frustrated. I have read it through a few times and still do not grasp some of it. If you have the patience to apply something as simple as the operant conditioning, you can actually make a habit within a month. For instance, I used to reward myself with 15 minutes of fiction reading for every chapter of biology that I read. Result? I went from a D to a B within a couple of months. I have helped some of my clients do the same procedure with quitting smoking and sticking with fitness plans. This book is one of the few university text books that I kept after my degree.

This is a very detailed book about behavior modification. It literally traces the history of behavioral modification from its origins and progresses into actual techniques that can be used in a variety of setting. Some of the chapters are quite dense, yet interesting. There is a comprehensive summary and the authors do a wonderful job with breaking down large units of information into readable points. There is a useful guide for functional analysis provided. The behavior contract is generic, but a decent basis for an individualized one. Finally, many behavioral methods are explained in simple terms and there are numerous examples that illustrate their usefulness.

Easy to read yet comprehensive

I was 'recommended' (not required) to purchase this book for a grad-level Game Theory class. I'm so glad I did!

Our class textbook is a little too complex and it's easy to miss the bigger picture, but in this book by Tadelis, the concepts are thoroughly explained for the novice reader AND it has the details which provide the necessary depth to understand the topics. I like the examples, the manner of writing (on your level, not above or at you), and it's made understanding Game Theory much more practical. Overall, I highly recommend this book for a student (or an intellectually curious learner) to help understand the complexity (and fun) that is Game Theory.

Excellent book - well written and easy to follow. Shame about the missing solutions!!

I am neither a student nor a lecturer but bought this bought for my own self-interest. It is an excellent text - very well written and introduces all the concepts clearly and concisely. In addition, the manner of writing is a refreshing change from the 'dry' style of so many other textbooks which make it far easier to read. I would certainly recommend this. The only real frustration for me (which is the only reason I have not given a top rating) is that the solutions offered on the website to the exercises in the book are incomplete and the full solutions are only available to lecturers (only the solutions for the even numbered questions are available to us mere mortals!) This is extremely frustrating as invariably it is the odd questions that seem to be the trickiest - whether this is by pure chance or intended I'm not sure. Still, I really don't see the need for this given that other textbooks regularly offer full solutions to all exercises. Annoyed!! :S

Great balance of rigor and readability

This book is an excellent text for an advanced undergraduate course or a first-year graduate course. In my opinion, it hits the sweet spot in terms of balancing rigor and readability. It is rigorous in the sense that it includes precise mathematical definitions of key ideas and results, and in the sense that it is thorough (covering all the main topics and discussing important technical caveats when relevant). It is readable in the sense that it includes a wide variety of examples (both to motivate the topics and to illustrate ideas), and in the sense that it is very clearly written. The writing is not too chatty, but also not too formal, and from a formatting perspective the book is clean and free of all the colored boxes and bloated figures that plague textbooks these days (especially undergraduate textbooks).
