Over-delivers, one to keep nearby and refer to again and again

I’ve been an avid reader of Ben’s emails for about a year (seriously, do yourself a favor and get on his list - [...] - for an entertaining education in email marketing / copywriting every weekday) and I was pleased to find that he was a believer and produced this book so I snagged it quick.

Christian Business Secrets is a great example of how someone can publish a quality book on a topic that they are passionate about. It’s simply a collection of transcribed interviews done with successful Christian business people. It’s a bit of a different kind of read but it flows along just fine. The main point is the quality of the content. It was actually kind of refreshing to feel like you’re a fly on the wall listening in on a conversation. I, for one, would be interested in listening to an audiobook version.

One of the things I most appreciated about this book was how it introduced me to so many Christians in business that I wasn’t aware of. I’ve ended up (gladly) joining their email lists, reading their blog posts and listening to their podcasts as a result.

This is a book I’ll definitely refer to in the future. There is so much to ponder and take action on and worth WAY more than the small cost.

Ben Settle does it again

I just want to say that "this book is amazing"
When I first read Ben Settle's email, I thought he is an obnoxious guy but then slowly as I got to know his style, I fell in love with it.
Infact, the first book I purchased from him "crackerjack selling secrets" was my introduction to the real marketing and copywriting.

I then purchased some of his other books and liked almost all of them.
But this book is different, if you are looking for copywriting and marketing education, then stay away from it but if you are looking for real life education, then this is the right choice for you.

This book is literally eye-opener for me. I am not an atheist by any means. After reading this book, I could see the different side of Ben Settle and some of his business friends. I would have never believed what was shared but due to hardships, struggles in my own life and my epiphanies and breakthroughs, I could see that whatever shared in the book is completely authentic and true.

If you are atheist, I would encourage you to buy this book, your view towards life and business will change forever.

Lots to think about

I am still working my way through the first chapter (interview) but already I have found multiple points that have refined my own definition of how and why I am in business.
As an example, the first takeaway for me was - if you are bringing a truly christian philosophy to bear on your business then you are a threat to our enemy and thus strong prayer support is not a luxury but a necessity.
There are quite a few of the usual points (at least for Ben) on business operations (eg. service before honor) - on the whole my only disappointment is that it isn't longer :-)

TRUE MEANING OF A LADY

I loved this story with its mystery, suspense, deceit and secrets. Pierre Bernard needs the inheritance left from his late mother to save the family plantation, Willow, but there are stipulations, he must marry a French lady. Josephine Depardieu grew up in Massachusetts and after the death of both her parents worked as a seamstress at a factory, but when it burns down, she is left with nothing. Many of the other girls are applying to be mail order brides and she does too, answering the ad from Pierre, after all, she speaks French since her father was from France, but can she pull off being a French lady of society? Can Pierre save Willow by marrying Josephine and make it a marriage in name only? Can Josephine accept a loveless and name only marriage? Why is Willow in trouble financially? Will the truth come to light before it is too late? The plot kept me captivated and the pages turning. The dialog is witty and the characters heartwarming. This is a wonderful addition to the American Mail-Order Brides series. Disclosure: I received an e-copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. All thoughts, opinions, and ratings are my own.

A wonderful story. I loved Josephine willingness to help save a home she though she did not belong. She was quite the definition of a lady if not truly French. Thrown in a thief and some well placed lies and Mrs. Caldwell has written a winner well worth your time.

Not good...

Where to start? Let's start with the smaller issues. Some typos and spelling mistakes, as well as whole sentences repeated in following paragraph. Hero and heroine have the same last name the first time their last names are mentioned at the beginning of the book; then the hero's last name is changed to a different last name…
Badly in need of editing.

More serious: poor writing. There's not that much to the story; elements of the storyline seem inflated to look more important than they actually are and fluff out the story. Even the reason for the hero having to marry a French lady is unclear and just doesn't make much sense (even more so at the end of the book). Silly story, silly characters with unlikely reactions. The characters' behavior is often inconsistent and doesn't make much sense. A few examples:
***Some spoilers***
• The hero is not very appealing at first. He appears uncaring, insensitive and self-centered, and shows a lack of consideration and respect for the heroine. For example, he does not even bother to pick her up himself, sends his cousin instead. He talks about sending her back, like one would a package, before even meeting her. But then he's very nice to her once he meets her.
• The biggest sore point in my opinion: the hero closed his heart to love and marriage because it hurt too much when his mother died (seriously?!!) although he was so young when she passed away that he barely remembers her. So he's decided he wants a marriage in name only, which means no children. Hard to believe for a person in his position who has a plantation to pass on to his heirs… He asked a woman to marry him without sharing that important bit of information? Unlikely! Heroine learns from the cousin that the marriage will be in name only, is saddened by that news and the prospect of not having any children but just accepts the situation without reconsidering marrying the hero, even though she still hasn't met him!
• The hero was raised in a household with at least one French parent and a French cook and yet doesn't like French cuisine. He reacts to cheese and sweet breads the same way most people react to chopped liver or snails! Again, unlikely!
• The villain comes to the heroine, tells her some lies and that the hero wants her to leave, and she just believes him, packs up and leaves, even though they shared an excellent evening that very night and the hero was overjoyed about their plans coming to fruition and the upcoming nuptials!

Great book for a becoming a greyline/citysights tour guide

writing this in haste....

I could not find this book in the Manhattan public library nor the queen's library nor could I find it at Strand.. its either sold out or there is a copy on hold

this is the go to book if you want to become a tour guide, I've read other books on new york city but this is the most comprehensive and will prepare you to give walking tours and bus tours

This book is nice and the paper quality is nice and it is very detailed and covers all of NYC in depth and gives an in-depth historical account of New York, it also focuses on architecture in New York city

As someone who walks 50 miles a week or so in New York City, I've collected a number of guide books over the years.

I am hoping to be a big apple greeter in the City , and as part of the training, plan to take the official guide test given by the city, a 175 questionnaire.

The city strongly recommends the use of this guide book for study purposes. I've been studying it intently and recommend it highly.

Great Book - Bronx Needs Work

The Blue Guide New York has a ton of information and is very useful to study for the licensing exam. Manhattan is covered extensively from north to south, east to west - and that's great!

However, I am extremely disappointed to find that out of 600+ pages, this book only devotes 9 pages to the Bronx. Why do we get no love?? The sections mentioned for the Bronx, is nothing more than a fleeting acknowledgement that my borough exists somewhere north of Manhattan. The author misses the mark on so many levels. For example:

The Bronx Zoo: There are only two paragraphs, none of which talks about the history of this amazing zoological park, which happens to be the largest metropolitan zoo in the US. The information provided in the book could have been found on the zoo's website - meh!

The Botanical Garden: Again, the author dropped the ball. What about the background of the land, who owned the land before it became parkland? Oh and what about the old forest?? What about the mill??

Pelham Bay Park: While the author made an effort by talking at length about Bartow Pell Mansion, she failed to detail the history of this area, especially during the Revolutionary War. There was an important battle here.

By the way, Arthur Avenue is not "sometimes" called The Real Little Italy of New York. It is ALWAYS called the Real Italy of New York.

To the author: In the next edition, please add more for the Bronx. Come for a visit - perhaps hang out with Mr. Lloyd Ultan. The Bronx deserves more than the pittance you throw at us on these 9 pages. I know you can do better.

Brubaker wraps up

Brubaker's Devil in Cellblock D might be my favorite arc ever to grace the pages of Daredevil (which is in the first Brubaker DD collection). This book doesn't reach those heights by any means, but it is solid and entertaining, and I feel it is a significant uptick from the Mister Fear arc that is in the second Brubaker Ultimate Collection. It also has Daredevil taking the first steps towards Shadowland (a crossover that has an unfairly bad rap). While you should read the earlier Brubaker stuff before you read this, it's definitely worth a buy if you like that earlier work.

Great end to two great runs on Daredevil

This is really the end to a looooong run on Daredevil that started with Brian Bendis and was carried on by Ed Burbaker. Both runs focused as much on Matt Murdock as a lawyer and a human being as much as they did Daredevil, costumed super hero. This volume will see Murdock trying to defend a client who doesn't want to be released from prison, and the introduction of Lady Bullseye, who is after Daredevil with some complex motivations.

This volume does get a little further into the mystic side of the Hand, the clan of ninja that have been prominent in Daredevil books since the Frank Miller days. I'm not always a fan of that in DD stories, but it works out well here.

The art is better in some spots than others, but overall does a great job capturing the tone of the stories. I'd absolutely recommend this, but only if you have read the three-volume "Ultimate Collection" by Bendis and the two by Burbaker that come before this one.

Another Brubaker/Lark Masterpiece

Look no further for some of the best modern Daredevil writing/art. The combination of Ed Brubaker and Michael Lark portray the Man Without Fear as a man wrought with plenty of fears, but is pulled in so many directions due to friendships, love, loss, and rage that Matt Murdock has very little time to realize just how many fears there are in his personal and professional lives. Being that this is Book 3 of the Brubaker & Lark collection/run, you will have to read the previous works (beginning at the Bendis/Maleev collection book 1 for the best results!) to get the full picture of what is happening and how it came to be. Don't fret about purchasing the previous collections...they are absolutely worth your time and money! The character of Daredevil is perfectly drafted and sculpted in the hands of these two titans of industry. If you are a fan of Ed Brubaker and Michael Lark, you will feel right at home. The writing is nothing short of stellar and the artwork strongly compliments the writing that helps lift this series easily to my top 5 favorite character story lines. If the Miller/Janson, Nocenti/Romita Jr., and Bendis/Maleev storylines of the character have become some of your favorites, the baton was truly passed to Brubaker and Lark to run with. Buy these books and prepare yourself for the ultimate roller coaster ride that breaks off its rails and never lets you off.

About the Author

John Corvino is Associate Professor and Chair of Philosophy at Wayne State University. A frequent speaker on LGBT issues, he has presented his talk "What's Wrong with Homosexuality?" and related programs at over 200 universities and other venues. He is the co-author (with Maggie Gallagher) of Debating Same-Sex Marriage (OUP, 2012). As "The Gay Moralist," he was a regular columnist for 365gay.com; his writing has also appeared in The Advocate, The Los Angeles Times, The New Republic online, and The New York Times online. An award-winning teacher, he is also the recipient of a 2004 Spirit of Detroit Award from the Detroit City Council for his work on behalf of LGBT rights.

The book I've always been looking for!

I started reading this book last night, and I am already half way finished with it.

John Corvino does a phenomenal job of responding to every criticism of homosexuality imaginable. I strongly recommend this book for anyone who is a gay-rights advocate or who is gay and struggling with the morality of homosexuality. While similar books and attempts to rationalize the morality of homosexuality may leave questions unanswered, this book does an excellent job of answering them all.

Corvino establishes credibility with readers, including myself, by acknowledging the opposition and responding to it with an eloquent and logical tone. Although Corvino's opinion and beliefs are not a secret, he never comes across as biased or uninformed. As a philosophy professor, he knows how to effectively communicate a sound argument that leaves no room for uncertainty.

I did not have any reviews on which to base my purchase of this book, and I do not regret it for a second. I have already recommended it to several friends, and I will probably reread this book multiple times.

Fun and rigorous

This is a book I've been waiting for. Even though I have no problems whatsoever with same-sex relationships, I'm always interested to see where the discussion has evolved and how we should approach the issues.

Corvino has spent two decades speaking, writing, and debating same-sex relationships. He is also a gay man, as am I, so many of the arguments, especially those calling same-sex peoples evil or in cahoots with Satan, hit home and are especially damaging.

In "What's Wrong with Homosexuality?", Corvino analyzes and refutes all the major arguments against homosexuality and same-sex marriage. Corvino covers everything from Biblical sanctions against same-sex unions, `risky lifestyle' arguments, to the unnaturalness and slippery-slope arguments. Along the way, he builds a convincing case that there is nothing morally wrong with same-sex relationships. Every argument fails for one reason or another, and even though people have strong convictions on this topic, we must use reason and evidence to form public policy, especially with same-sex marriage being such a hot-button issue.

Corvino not only shows why the arguments against homosexuality don't work, but he also provides us with tools we can use to further the discussion about homosexuality. For many, this topic is a non-starter: "There's nothing wrong with homosexuality," they'll say. And Corvino agrees. But not everyone does. And if we're going to make any headway when it comes to same-sex marriage and societies acceptance of same-sex unions, we must be willing to reasonably discuss the issues with people we disagree with.

"What's Wrong with Homosexuality?" should be read by everyone, even those that disagree with Corvino. It's filled with personal anecdotes, philosophical arguments, and some witty humor. Corvino is the perfect guide for anyone willing to learn.

Enjoyable even if you're not a non-fiction reader

Being primarily a fiction kinda girl, this isn't the type of book I usually read, but I was browsing Netgalley one day and let's just say the title grabbed my attention. I clicked through to read the description, prepared to be outraged, and was somewhat relieved to see that the book is actually written by a gay rights advocate and philosopher who also happens to be a homosexual man himself.

Of course, in answering the question of the title, “What's wrong with homosexuality?”, Corvino could just simply state: “nothing”, but that's the short answer and this book seeks to look at the bigger picture, and examine why there's nothing wrong with it. Chapter by chapter, Corvino systematically addresses all of the arguments commonly used against homosexuality in general and same-sex marriage in particular and essentially decimates them. He does so in such a logical, even-handed and engaging manner that it's not only easy to read and digest, it makes his argument all the more powerful. While being very open about his own very personal stake in the issue, he approaches each topic in a remarkably objective way, backing up his statements with evidence and combining it with his own experience only when appropriate. The subjectivity inherent in the latter aspect could have weakened his argument but, as used sparingly here, it actually strengthens it, powerfully reinforcing the importance of homosexual rights and the effects the lack of them can have on people's lives.

What I found most fascinating, in terms of the anecdotes Corvino describes, was his relationship with Glenn Stanton, an evangelical Christian who vocally opposes same-sex marriage. The two frequently travel together for debates on the issue, and despite their fundamentally different beliefs, actually consider each other friends. The story that particularly struck me was Corvino's account of when he told Stanton about his intended commitment ceremony with his partner, Mark, and Stanton wished him a hearty and sincere congratulations. It just boggles my mind that people like Stanton count gay people amongst their friends, and actually wish those friends well in their relationships, but then turn around and say how wrong those relationships are. For Corvino, it's a sign that he's getting through; that things will change, even in the minds of the most strident opposers of same-sex marriage. But I'm not so sure – to me it feels like if such a friendship still hasn't gotten through to these people, then it seems nothing will.

Perhaps it's the fence-sitters who will be persuaded, and maybe that's what counts. If anything was going to persuade them, it would probably be this book. The title works in making it appear that it could be arguing against the very thing it's in support of, and so perhaps it will challenge people who turn to it looking to have their views reaffirmed and instead find quite the opposite. But again I worry that if someone like Stanton - who knows and likes Corvino personally and has heard his arguments many times - can't be persuaded, then few can.

Still, even if it is mainly preaching to the converted, What's Wrong with Homosexuality? provides a useful and enlightening discussion on the arguments relating to same-sex marriage, and empowers the reader with plenty of facts and persuasive points in favour of it. This was what initially attracted me to reading it; especially the chapter on the biblical arguments against homosexuality, as these are what I've primarily encountered in real life and also the ones I have felt least able to intelligently argue against, not having read the Bible myself. Corvino quotes and analyses each of the references to homosexuality found in the Bible, examining ways they may have been misinterpreted (eg: Sodom's sin is inhospitality/aggression against heavenly creatures, not homosexuality) or become outdated (“If you adopt a simplistic 'God said it' approach to the [Bible], then be prepared to swallow some pretty nasty conclusions about slavery, women, and so on. If, instead, you insist on sensitivity to historical and cultural context, then the homosexuality passages must be reexamined in that light”). Because of the encounters I've had with certain people using their religion as an excuse for their homophobia (amongst other things), and my own lack of knowledge on biblical matters, I found this chapter to be incredibly fascinating and enlightening.

Indeed, the whole book is, though much of the rest contains arguments and conclusions I've heard of/come to before. Still, it's important that they're said, and said well; as he does with the biblical chapter, Corvino eviscerates the notions that homosexuality and same-sex marriage are wrong based on the risks, the “unnaturalness” or the “slippery slope” (you know, the ridiculous idea that “if man marries man, what's next?! Man marries dog?!” Because two consenting adults is totally the same thing as bestiality, uh-huh).

Importantly, What's Wrong with Homosexuality? never feels like it's sermonising or lecturing. It remains conversational throughout, and it's clear that Corvino wants to engage the reader and talk to them and with them, rather than down to them. Even for someone who isn't a massive non-fiction reader, I found this book to be extremely interesting, engaging and yes, even enjoyable. I came away feeling more informed, more fired up and frankly, more touched than I thought I would be. Because what this book highlights most of all is that, at its very root, this argument is one of love and compassion – and it cannot be won without those things.

Just in time for FCC mmW deliberation, a comprehensive textbook

Just as FCC opens the issue of mobile use in the millimeter (mmW) wave region with the NOI in Docket 14-177, we have the 1st major text book on the technology involved.

In some ways this book is reminiscent of the pioneering 1976 publication of Robert Dixon’s Spread Spectrum Systems with Commercial Applications. At the time Dixon’s book was published there were published articles on most aspects of spread spectrum/CDMA technology, but they were scattered other a lot of different journals, often with different jargon, nomenclatures, and symbology in equations. While Dixon had few equations, he tied all the concepts together in a single approachable book. Similarly, but at a higher technical level, this book ties together its subject matter in a consistent way from a variety of sources, although in this case the authors are themselves major pioneers themselves in this technology.

The book deals with mobile millimeter wave systems, focusing on base station/mobile uplinks and downlinks. There is little specifically on fixed systems although much of the content is application to both fixed and mobile.

But the people who have to draft comments in Docket 14-177 and those who will be designing mmW mobile systems needs not be concerned absence of information on fixed or satellite systems. Within its prime subject matter of CMRS uplinks/downlinks it ties together for the first time information in disparate issues such as

•multipath mobile mmW propagation,
•atmospheric effects
•antenna technology including adaptive antenna technology to overcome the multipath,
•mmW device technology, and
•high level design issues

It is a major contribution in the mobile area. I hope the next edition deals with fixed issues also, although much of the content is applicable to both.

The new standard reference in the exploding field of 5G wireless

High Frequency wireless (millimeter wave) can deliver speeds well into the gigabits. At millimeter wavelengths you can aggregate hundreds of MHz of spectrum compared to the 20 MHz typical of today's wireless networks. High frequency antennas are very small, so it's practical to put 50 of them on a chip for massive MIMO.

Rappaport, Heath and colleagues are world leaders in research in millimeter wave high frequencies and MIMO. Rappaport's NYU Wireless Center has been sending teams out to get empirical data on frequencies like 28 GHz. They are testing in two of the toughest locations for a wireless network: Manhattan and Downtown Brooklyn. Heath at the University of Texas built one of the first MU MIMO testbeds.

With literally $billions going into 5G wireless research you need the latest information and best sources. Many of the claims in traditional wireless textbooks are not proving out in empirical testing. This book is current & well-informed and likely to be the standard for years if the authors' issue regular updates. It's a technical book and not easy reading for non-engineers but the style is clear and the explanations well written.

For the record, I'm a technology writer who has interviewed two of the authors. Rappaport was part of a webinar I did fpr the Marconi Society.

Like the previous "Wireless Communications

Like the previous "Wireless Communications: Principles and Practice" by the same author, these two books are very very great (the most recommended) for graduate students, engineers, researchers ... in Wireless Communication. I love the most is that the author explains everything in a clear, systematic manner, and visions/suggestion how this field will be in the future... so many people can understand (not only professors).

However, like me, many people after graduated (Bachelor, Master, Ph.D.) in this field, then working in industry. So I am looking for books which more practical, implementation (Signal Processing, Hardware, Circuit, RF....). Since the author has a super broad experiences, working in both academy and industry, I hope the author write books: interdisciplinary from principles of wireless to hardware implementation, System on Chip, antenna on chip... That would help many people.

A Beautiful Edition of Longchenpa's Classic

This is the first English translation of Longchenpa's seminal "Precious Treasury of Basic Space" that has been done and published by a Tibetan lama. And even though I'm tempted to read it in comparison to the other versions currently available (Barron and Dowman translations) I feel it is much better to approach it with fresh eyes and heart. And I find I like it very much!

All three texts in this book are presented in both the Tibetan (on one side of the page) along with the English translation. The bulk is Longchenpa's text (p. 30-161), but it is nicely framed with a prayer of invocation "Calling the Lama from Afar", by Chatral Rinpoche, at the start (p. 16-27), and a short guru yoga sadhana by Jigme Lingpa at the end (p. 164-177). Also included are the brief preface and forward, and the very detailed glossary (p. 179-210) and endnotes (p. 211-216).

There are a couple of things I really like about this Vajra Books edition - besides the way it is presented with quality layout and binding - they are the lineage picture on p.13 which shows a thangka of the author's 16 teachers with realistic smiling portraits, and the complete simplicity of the translation.

As this most wonderful of Longchenpa's works begins...

"Without searching or striving is the simply natural expanse,
Primordially pervasive and sublime - listen, I will elucidate.
The spontaneously accomplished expanse is the basis for the origination of everything.
Its essence is empty, and its nature is unobstructed,
So that nothing exists, but everything is manifest.
From the expanse of the three kayas, samsara and nirvana are self-arising,
But not moved from space, the nature of phenomena, the field of bliss.
In the sky-like continuum, the unchanging great expanse of mind itself,
Intermittent play, the miraculous expanse of compassion,
Is nothing other than adornment of space...."

Compelling Ancient Writings Poetically Translated

Here is a work that will leave you feeling you have been in the presence of great masters, in awe yet uncertain what has been said. It’s as if listening to a series of great arias as the authors climb to the greatest heights. There are three distinct sections, by three authors, all of them famous in the Dzogchen tradition of Buddhism. The three are Chatralwa Sangye Dorie (In the first section; Calling the Lama from Afar), Longchen Rabjam commonly called Longchenpa (In the second section; The Precious Treasury of Phenomenal Space), and Jingme Lingpa (In the third section; The Heart Essence of the Great Expanse). The first appears a cry for help to escape the suffering of samsara, the second a path into the ultimate reality, the third resting in that reality itself. Here is described what some call the highest practice, Ati.

Don’t start with this book, expecting to come away with an understanding of Dzogchen practice. There are other places to begin that quest. Here you must simply imbibe and let the senses respond. That’s right, simply listen, and after a first reading you may find yourself saying, I’m not sure what I just experienced, but it has left me in awe and with a lingering sense of bliss.

Glossary and footnotes seem a distraction, like trying to read the program in a dark theatre during a great performance. That’s why this book should be read more than once. At first enjoy the performance, and then try to figure it out if you must. Here is a work that in its very nature cries out to be experienced over and over, and then perhaps understood, but even then only on a non-intellectual basis. The text itself is 162 pages, but that number is cut in half by the original Tibetan set opposite the English. Savor the 81 pages of poetic translation. Just the poetic nature justifies putting this book near the top of your must read list, but you may find yourself receiving much more.

Compassionate mind?

A valuable anthology of seminal Dzogchen scriptures. I only have one criticism and that is Rinpoche's translation of the word "bodhicitta" (byang chub sems). He translates it "compassionate mind", which is far away from the meaning of the word "bodhicitta" which literally means "mind of enlightenment", and no closer to the Tibetan form, byang chub sems, which literally means "pure and total mind".

How does Rinpoche come to translate "mind of enlightenment" and "pure and total mind" as "compassionate mind"? It's as if he were translating a completely different word. Even worse, he does not even list "compassionate mind" in the glossary, to point out that "compassionate mind" is his interpretive translation of "bodhicitta" (byang chub sems).

I am a firm believer in the doctrine of "translate the word, not your personal interpretation of the word". When translating words, one ought to translate the word itself, not your own fanciful interpretation. Otherwise it is not translation, it is original composition which is at best paraphrasing of the source text. Okay, you may say that this is not so, because the Tibetan translates "bodhi", enlightenment, as "byang chub", pure and total. However, there are two points: one, Tibetan did not have a word for "bodhi", enlightenment, so they came up with "byang chub". Second, when the India scriptures were first translated in the 8th century, all the translated words were standardised and set for the future across the entire canons. Therefore, for example, for all of Tibetan Buddhism, "bodhi" would be "byang chub", and "bodhicitta" "byang chub sems". However, in English translation it is nothing like that. There are no standardised translations. Every individual translator does his own individual thing. In short, "compassionate mind" is the wrong translation of "bodhicitta", in my opinion. Remember, of course, though, that English is not Rinpoche's first language. Still, the translation must be either "mind of enlightenment", "mind of awakening", or "pure and total mind". That is what the word is. The word is not "compassionate mind".

That is simply the wrong translation.
