From the author: For nearly 2 decades, I have been arguing that research does not support the pervasive claims that getting married makes people happier or healthier. As a social scientist, I care about the accuracy of claims about research findings. But when it comes to proclamations about marriage and single life, the issues are not just academic. Real single people – over 100 million of them in the U.S. alone – are getting the message that science has shown that their lives are second rate. It hasn't and they aren't. In the past few years, several important studies and review papers have been published that make it clearer than it has ever been before that we have been misled about the supposed benefits of getting married. I have discussed those publications in several of the brief chapters in this book, many of which were posts that first appeared on my "Living Single" blog at Psychology Today or my "Single at Heart" blog at Psych Central. The most important chapter, I think, is Chapter 2, "No study has ever shown that getting married makes people happier or healthier – and no study ever will." In it, I make the case more thoroughly and forcefully than ever before. In fact, I think that chapter is so significant that I have published it as a stand-alone book, The Science of Marriage: What We Know That Just Isn't So. The first chapter in this book, "Living single: Lightening up those dark, dopey myths," is a broad-ranging discussion of the psychology of single life. In it, I challenge the pervasive claims about the benefits of marriage, but that is just a part of the discussion. The chapter originally appeared in Cupach and Spitzer's edited volume, The Dark Side of Personal Relationships II. As with most academic volumes, it is very expensive. Now interested readers can access my chapter in this much more affordable book. Part I of Marriage vs. Single Life: How Science and the Media Got It So Wrong includes just those two substantial chapters. The second chapter was originally written for fellow academics and some sections are fairly detailed. Part II begins with Chapter 3, a briefer and more accessible version of the same arguments from Chapter 2. The chapters, 3 through 19, are about "Getting it right." I've subtitled that section, "On getting married and not getting happier or healthier or more connected and not getting to live longer: What the research really does show and why." Finally, in Part IV, chapters 37 through 41, I take a step back to try to account for all the misinformation about marriage and single life. This excellent book by Bella DePaulo, Ph.D. shatters so many myths regarding marriage and it's glorification in our society. Myths like "Married people live longer" and "Married people are happier with life than singles" are completely exposed by Dr. DePaulo's world class research. The book is easy to read even though much of it is based on academic studies. Single people are definitely discriminated against in our world. This book should be discussed on every major news story that glorifies marriage and stigmatizes single people. Highly recommended.

Destined to be an occult classic

It is appropriate that an important contribution to occult literature is to be found in a slim volume with an unassuming and quirky title.

The author presents sufficient theory and practice that will allow even a neophyte to access in a reasonably safe and suprisingly convenient manner the astral realms. Quite an accomplishment. But this is by no means only a book for beginners. Advanced practitioners (assuming they have an open mind) will find a great deal to ponder and benefit from in this volume. Anyone serious about magickal practice or even just magickal theory should acquire this book and consider its contents carefully. They will be well repaid for their efforts.

Aleister Crowley was the baddest of bad boys. He made great advancements in the magickal realm while sending shock waves through the clubby and largely ineffectual grade system of traditional occult fraternities, It is no small irony that the magickal orders that profess to be Thelemic are as full of pretentious poseurs as those that Crowley blasted with his extraordinary talent and application. I suspect that his book will not be well liked by those in authority in Crowleyian magickal orders. The author reveals too many secrets for comfort. I believe Crowley would have approved of this book that captures the spirit of authentic Thelemic magickal theory and practice.

Magickal principles applied to the "talking board".

If your interest is strictly in the Ouija Board itself, the 1st 2 chapters will give you the history of the Board, the Game and it's media press. But this book is really about applying consistent control in all forms of divination to focus the type of Spirit called. Rather than repeat well worn (and well published) truisms, the author seems to have concentrated on what Aleister Crowley and his disciples actually DID, whether it was thru Tarot, Astrology, Ceremonial Magick or Enochian. The common factor was exerting their Will and concentration to calling forth specific Results. Remakable. 93 / 93 Chuck Furnace

Occult forces viewed on the physical plane

This book provides quite classical information on the little know bit about the beast himself, Aleister Crowley. It applies basic information from the banishing ritual and the information in his pages to a quite interesting experience that can be had by not only the highest ceremonial magician's. The author pulls together a good amount of information about this board and the way it was used by one of the greatest occultists of all time. The book is defiantly worth more then a simple pick up at a library as it can be useful for review long after the first read.

A fun and easy read for kids

STINK AND THE INCREDIBLE SUPER-GALACTIC JAWBREAKER is the second story centered on Judy Moody's younger brother Stink.

Stink Moody buys a huge jawbreaker at the candy store and sucks on it until his tongue is as blue as a skink. When the jawbreaker doesn't break his jaw, he writes a letter of complaint to the candy company. Much to his surprise, he receives a 10-pound box of jawbreakers in return. Stink is so excited that he begins a letter-writing campaign to see if he can get more free stuff.

But Stink is so preoccupied with letter writing that he hardly notices that his best friend, Webster, is mad at him. It takes Stink a while to figure out why Webster is so angry. Could it have something to do with the crumpled envelope he finds? Will he be able to patch things up with his friend? It will take a little creativity.

Megan McDonald is the author of the popular Judy Moody series as well as STINK: The Incredible Shrinking Kid. She got the idea for Stink's latest adventure by watching two kids in the candy section of the grocery store. They were in awe of giant, confetti-flecked jawbreakers. McDonald knew Stink would want one.

STINK AND THE INCREDIBLE SUPER-GALACTIC JAWBREAKER is a chapter book that young kids can really sink their teeth into. As an added bonus, the author has scattered idioms throughout the book. And at the end of the story is a list of idioms that the reader can hunt for.

Hi my name is Connor Z. and I think that Stink and the Super Galactic Jawbreaker by Megan McDonald is an awesome humor book! It's about a kid that has a jawbreaker. He gets mad because something happens to his jawbreaker. I am not going to tell you any more but I will tell you your kids will "love it"! It's good for grades 2 and 3 so go buy it!!!!!!

This is just what a kid would do if he figured out that complaining would get him free stuff! His parents are smart enough to control the situation, and Stink learns a good lesson. My grandson loved it. Great bedtime reading!

A Short but Exhaustive Look at the Music and the Man.

I had set out to write a review of David Morrell's unique thriller Murder as a Fine Art (which I still intend to write) but as I was researching the author, I came across something unexpected: this thriller writer, the man who created John Rambo in his debut novel First Blood in 1972, which eventually greatly influenced the thriller genre of that era (and continues to do so today!), had stepped way out of his expected role and written a short biography that examined the music of Frank Sinatra. I was intrigued. I'm a huge Sinatra fan, and I did not hesitate to grab this eBook off the shelf.

For two hours, I did not put down my Kindle. I read it straight through. And why not? Morrell essentially leads us through a written two-hour concert tribute to Frank Sinatra's career, while highlighting the songs and albums, and mixing in the singer's personal, tumultuous history as it affected his outlook, his voice, his success, and his failures. Sinatra had an unbelievably long and prolific career, yet Morrell manages to make sense of it all, weaving it into a narrative that left me with a mosaic image of Sinatra I've never had before.

Instead of just writing about the popularity of the man, Morrell focuses more on the musical influences and choices made by the Chairman of the Board, covering many behind-the-scenes moments in the recording booths at Columbia, Capital, and Reprise Records. More importantly, he "gets" Sinatra. He understands that this man stood out with his attention to details like timing, diction, and lyrical passion. He explains the way Sinatra used to write out the lyrics by hand, over and over again, until he discovered the underlying meaning to the words, so he could sing those meanings back to the microphone and the audience. What Morrell really does here is explain to us why we like Sinatra. And as a big fan of Frank's, I'd say Morrell gets it right. If you love Sinatra, you've got to read this. If you are ambivalent about him, read this and you'll very likely come away with admiration for the man you never thought you'd have. If you hate him, this might just change your mind.

One of the many albums Morrell highlights of Sinatra's is In the Wee Small Hours (1955). This has always been a favorite of mine, and the coverage it receives here is indicative of Morrell's insight into the man and his music. If you are only familiar with Sinatra's big hits, and you want to hear one of his best concept albums (and as Morrell points out, Sinatra helped to develop the concept of the concept album) then download this album. Sit back and be prepared to be won over by a sound experience you won't soon forget.

Morrell's study of Frank Sinatra does not shy away from letting us see the troubled side of this artist, but he never turns this piece into a gossip column. Instead, he shows how the alcoholism and the womanizing and the combativeness of this manic depressive combined to influence an industry that was just coming into its own in the middle of the last century. Was Sinatra a scoundrel at times? Yes. Was he sympathetic? Absolutely. In fact, both of those factors were a major reason for the public's interest in him. All of it came together to create an international icon that still influences pop-culture today. But Morrell does not dwell on these aspects of Sinatra's life. He keeps the story firmly on the music. And that's as it should be. Because Sinatra's music is a story worth reading. And David Morrell does Frank Sinatra's entire career justice in this short but exhaustive history of this brilliant, troubled artist and his remarkable music.

Absolutely what you want/need to read.

If you, like I, have grown up listening to your parents' music and love it, you need to read this book. I was transported to the living room of my parents' tiny house, listening to Sinatra on the turntable. I love listening to my dad's music once again, and then claiming it as MY music.

As always, David Morrell has done his research. That and the fact that the reader can tell that Morrell cares deeply about the topic, make this a must read for music lovers. You don't have to be a Sinatra fan. If you enjoy music or the history of popular music, you will enjoy this essay.

Like the idea of renting, but it was almost worthless to him as Amazon isn't authorized to give out Wiley codes in order to go online and do the assignments. Had to pay another $95 to get the code from Wiley. Not a good deal in the long run.

It's a book it actually is poorly written but since it is a requirement to have for college I guess it will do.
