Best opening scene...

Right from the start you see that this heroine can take care of herself. First chapter of this book has Dana Markham kicking ass and not bothering with names.

Dana and her 10 yr old son have been on the run for years from her ex husband who is dirty in many ways. She's learned that she can depend on no one but herself to stay alive as the FBI has fumbled more than once. In the latest attempt by her ex husbands hire killers to kill her and take their son she manages to kill all but one and that one turns out to be an undercover FBI agent who ends up taking responsibility for Dana and her son by going on the run with them.

I didnt realize until about half way into this that I had read this years ago under another name. I take it since the cover and name of the book have changed its a complete reboot. I only say this to those who may have read the first book Dark and Dangerous (which is no longer available). If you haven't read that book then I recommend Dead Run. This was a fairly fast paced read with like I said a very exciting opening and two people who fall in love while on the run with lots of great scenes with her son and their very protective dog.

Great story with a strong female character who is also a mom! It was nice to read a story where you get too know the characters, before they have sex.Sara protects her son ,from his father who wants her dead. Caine is FBI and is assigned to protect her and her.Sara does a good job protecting her son . But it's getting harder to do it alone.

I was given this book for an honest review... The only thing I did not like was.... I WANTED MORE!! I loved how Dana takes care of herself & her boy. She tried depending on people to help but it didn't seem to work out in her favor. I love how strong she is & how she teaches her son to trust her & be strong. This is a great book that will keep you on the edge of your seat! Love how she takes the bad guys out! But she never tries to claim to be a bad ass..... She is just resourceful!

Hunting monsters isn't about finding them

Full disclosure, I'm a long-time reader of Darren's blog Tetrapod Zoology.

"What we have here, ladies and gentlemen, is failure to communicate." That's actually one of the major themes that comes through in this book. This isn't yet another regurgitation of famous monster stories. Rather, it's an examination of the evidence that supports these famous stories. It's the uncropped pictures (as of Nessie), the full scope of the arguments over the Patterson Bigfoot footage, and so on. It talks about the political and commercial agendas of various players, something you rarely see covered.

In other words, it's a warts-and-all investigation of the evidence, and that's why it's about hunting monsters, rather than finding them. I do agree with the other reviewer who said that the book gets repetitive, but in a way that's the point. Ultimately, it's the same problem repeatedly, of questionable (often staged) evidence, credulous and/or sloppy investigators, authors who over-generalize and ignore details (particularly on lake and sea monsters) in order to make better stories, and, ultimately, monsters whose descriptions somehow morph over the decades to mirror the latest pop science fads. In other words, it is a failure to communicate, of stories being retold, misinterpreted, respun, and ultimately solidified into cultural tropes that have little to do with the original evidence. And that original evidence often seems to have been a prank, a campfire story, or a get-rich-quick scheme.

This is the type of investigation you don't find in all those books on Nessie or Sasquatch. While the book acknowledges that there's still mysteries out there (like the Orang Pendek), in most cases cryptids seem to be the product of human creators and true believers, rather than nature. And that needs to be communicated.

The author was on the Monstertalk podcast plugging this book. He was interesting and engaging so I thought I would give his book a shot.

Naish comes across as a sympathetic skeptic. He clearly does not believe that any of the creatures covered in this relatively brief book have a flesh and blood existence but he does not dismiss the field of cryptozoology as a psuedoscience either. He evaluates evidence fairly and takes great pains to explain why eyewitness testimony can't establish the existence of these creatures anymore than it can establish the existence of ghosts, fairies, vampires, witches, etc. The physical evidence is always either ambiguous or turns out to be something mundane. Naish concludes that cryptozoology is ultimately more about psychology and sociology and there is precious little about zoology here. Yet he does not think this is all a waste of time and effort and that good can (and has) come of it.

Only once in the book does Naish come off as unfair. He correctly points out the agenda of some creationists in encouraging, promoting, and financing African expeditions to find surviving sauropods. He is on firm ground when he says that they are mistaken that any success will somehow further the creationist cause. However, the extended rant he goes on claiming creationists are out to destroy science was over the top. He let his personal feelings get the best of him.

In conclusion, the book is highly recommended. Skeptics will have view endorsed but can profit from the occasions other skeptics jumped to premature conclusions that the author points out. Believers will come away with a better understanding of the mainstream scientific position on these creatures and what does and does not constitute compelling evidence.

Great overview of the subject from the well qualified perspective of a paleozoologist

A very enjoyable read. Naish approaches the subject with the obvious benefit of a lifetime studying animals, living and dead, and in particular, vertebrates and tetrapods. This brings considerable credibility to the discussions of things like plesiosaur fins, pterosaur wings and primate feet. Naish not only understands the anatomical details of numerous animals, he understands how information is gathered from paleontological field work and naturalists' observations of living creatures.

While it is basically in the genre of a "debunking" book, he doesn't do it in a smug or condescending way. Naish tries to seriously engage the claims of cryptozoologists and gives their motivations the benefit of the doubt. Only after considering a range of options does he suggest that certain observations may be deliberate hoaxes.

The basic point is that cryptozoology, or the beliefs in mystery monsters, tell us much more about human beliefs, perceptions and folklore than about possible species new to science.

New evidence, largely in the form of molecular data, have shown that many morphological, behavioural, physiological and anatomical characters associated with basic life history features, specifically whether wasps are ecto- or endoparasitic, or idiobiont or koinobiont, can be grossly misleading in terms of the phylogeny they suggest. This book shows how, with better supported phylogenetic hypotheses entomologists can understand far more about the ways natural selection is acting upon them.

This new book also focuses on this superfamily with which the author has great familiarity and provides a detailed coverage of each subfamily, emphasising� anatomy, taxonomy and systematics, biology, as well as pointing out the importance and research potential of each group. About the Author

Donald L. J. Quicke is currently Visiting Professor at the Department of Biology, Faculty of Science, Chulalongkorn University, Thailand. He graduated from Oxford University with a degree in zoology and after doctoral and postdoctoral work on snail neurophysiology, sea anemone ecology and spider venoms, made parasitic wasps, and especially the ichneumonoid wasp family Braconidae, his main love and research interest. He held a lectureship at Sheffield University, moved to Imperial College London in 1993 and held a joint post between them and the Natural History Museum, London, until retiring in 2013 to live in Thailand. He was made Professor of Systematics in 2008. He has travelled widely collecting and studying parasitic wasps, especially in Africa. Over the past years he has described more than 560 new species and 76 new genera, including a number of fossil taxa, as well as making extensive studies of functional anatomy parasitic wasp ovipositors which are of enormous biological importance. A lot of his recent work has concerned global diversity estimation and patterns.

Fascinating premise

John Simpson’s premise for Undefeated Love, a male/male romance novel, is absolutely fascinating: Kurt Mueller is a young gay man in pre-WWII Berlin. Ernst Rohm, leader of the SA, and best friend of Hitler, takes a shine to Mueller and makes him a member of the SA, mostly to be his boytoy. Mueller begins to rise in the ranks, first in the SA, then the SS, and he actually becomes a member of Hitler’s private guard. During all this, Mueller maintains a relationship with his true love Stefan. The story is packed with plot points that weave through the Third Reich and a concentration camp, and enough treachery and danger to fill an epic novel. And therein lies my objection to this. As a male/male romance novel, it follows the formula that I’ve come to know, having read several of this genre: the book is no more than 200 pages, packed with explicit sex scenes, and has appealing characters with a central gay love story. Coupled with the interesting premise, this is a most satisfying romance novel. But I wanted much more. Simpson is a good writer. He knows his subject well, both the gay elements and the Nazi elements. I would much rather have read an epic novel of a gay man’s struggle in Nazi Germany. I wanted tons of more development in both plot and character. I longed for character delineation, descriptions unique to each character so that Nazis were extremely nasty and cruel, heroes were wildly inventive and cunning. As it stands in its present state, Undefeated Love is a satisfying tale of a man to whom things come easily, a man who rises quickly in the ranks, a man who thinks of a plan that is instantly carried out without much struggle, a man who has few true obtacles in his path, a man in a Nazi Germany where dialogue sounds extremely modern and American, where there are few pictures painted of a Germany rich in culture, sights, and sounds. With this kind of development, Simpson could have an amazingly rich epic novel of the struggle of a gay man to survive in a period unique to our times, the Nazi Germany where gays were persecuted as much as Jews, thus drawing a parallel that could not only have been a great service to gay culture but a path to a bestselling mainstream novel. I liked Undefeated Love; I only wish I could have loved it.

The two main characters Kurt and Stefan I wanted to have more connective interactive tenderness to help strenghten their devotion during the situation they faced . Yes they both professed love, but Kurt was selfish for most of their relationaship doing what seemed his own agenda. He did become self sacrificing in the end which I feel saved the read.
