About the Author
Ronni L. Gordon, PhD, is a prominent author of foreign language textbooks, reference books, and instructional multimedia programs. She is vice president of Mediatheque Publisher Services, a leader in the development of foreign language instructional materials. She holds a PhD in Spanish language and Spanish and Spanish American literature from Rutgers University, and has taught and coordinated Spanish language programs and taught Spanish American literature at Harvard University and Boston University. An education consultant, she has read in foreign languages for the National Endowment for the Humanities, presented at the United States Department of Education, and consulted on states' K-12 academic standards for world languages. She is an associate scholar of a Philadelphia-based think tank and is chairman of the board of directors of Dolce Suono Ensemble.

David M. Stillman, PhD, is a well-known writer of foreign langauge textbooks, reference books, and instructional multimedia programs. He is president of Mediatheque Publisher Services, a leader in the development of foreign language instructional materials. He holds a PhD in Spanish linguistics from the University of Illinois, and has taught and coordinated foreign language programs at Boston University, Harvard, and Cornell. He teaches languages and linguistics and coordinates an innovative program of student-led conversation practice at The College of New Jersey. He is a frequent presenter at national and regional conventions of language educators, has consulted on states' K-12 academic standards for world languages, and has been appointed to national committees devoted to the improvement of teacher training.

About the Author
Alistair Darling is the Member of Parliament for Edinburgh South West. Initially appointed as Chief Secretary to the Treasury in 1997, he moved to become Secretary of State for Work and Pensions in 1998. He spent another four years as Secretary of State for Transport, also becoming Secretary of State for Scotland in 2003. He served as Secretary of State for Trade and Industry in 2006, before Gordon Brown promoted him to Chancellor in 2007.

Has promise, but feels rambling and disjointed

Having read both 'On The Brink' and 'Too Big To Fail', I wasn't expecting to learn a whole lot of new stuff from this book, but I was nonetheless looking foward to a Euro-centric view on the GFC. Unfortunately, the book seems less about the GFC and more about the politics and performance of the then ruling Labour party. Fair enough, but I guess I was expecting something more along the lines of these other books.

Reading this book is a frustrating experience, too, as he chops and changes all the time. He'll start describing how he was dealing with a bank crisis, then suddenly switch to backgrounding some internal debate within the Labour party happening at the same time, and then when he comes back to saving the bank - voila! - it's all resolved without really explaining what happened in any detail. The two books mentioned above were much more clearly laid out, with chapters and sections being chronological and staying on topic - if only 'Back from the Brink' were the same....

Great opportunity wasted

This was a great opportunity wasted. It read more like "What Alistair did next". Rather than reflecting on the positions of the major players, how policy was reached, how decisions were enacted, etc. - it is a chronicle of 'I' and 'me'. Very disappointing, especially for a player at the heart of a major global crisis.

More Than A Diary of Meetings

As head of the UK Treasury from June 2007 until a few days after the Labour Party's electoral defeat in May 2010, Alistair Darling played a key role in the attempt by the world's central bankers and finance ministers to manage the financial crisis, a crisis that erupted within a month of his taking office. This book offers an insider's perspective on the crisis and a great deal more. The artful way in which the narrative is structured allows Darling to work in all sorts of asides without seeming to ramble. The reader learns something of Darling's family--several generations of it--and his political career; the Treasury's budget process; the means by which Labour politicians attempt to reconcile politics and policy; the differences amongst the UK, EU, US, France and China with respect to governmental process; the peculiar physical layout of Numbers 10-12, Downing Street; how the Chancellor of the Exchequer did his own grocery shopping and cooking, and stacked his own dishwasher; and the author's difficult relations with the Bank of England's governor, Mervyn King, and with Gordon Brown, who had himself headed the Treasury until he showed Tony Blair the door of Number 10.

In taking shots at King and Brown, Darling is careful. Although he implies that King took the Bank of England into politics and sided with the Conservatives ahead of the election, he says merely that King "came far too close to ... appearing to side with the Tories." He suggests that King leaked information to the Conservatives but does not flatly accuse him of having done so. Darling's criticisms of Brown are often couched as criticisms of Brown's advisers, whom Darling refers to as "attack dogs." The book contains a fair amount of praise for Brown, but one gets the impression that this has been included in order to make the account seem balanced and thereby add weight to the criticisms. Darling is on firm ground in claiming that he saw earlier than Brown that the recession would be bad and hard to shake. And it is incontestable that when the Conservatives took office they greatly augmented the power of the Bank of England.

The book's drier passages are relieved by bright anecdotes and observations, and many of the book's zingers are appropriately targeted and quite effective. Again and again Darling expresses his incredulity at the arrogance, cupidity and blindness of bankers. And he expresses surprise, or feigns it, at the strange machinery which passes for government in the United States.

In a particularly effective passage Darling explains in very simple language why austerity is bad policy in a time of recession.

Darling's account of the Lehman Brothers weekend (September 12-14, 2008) differs from that given by Henry Paulson in his book, ON THE BRINK. We will never know what really happened on Lehman Brothers weekend but, for what it's worth, the account in BACK FROM THE BRINK seems more plausible than the one in ON THE BRINK. (We'll have to wait a bit for OVER THE BRINK, in which Ben Bernanke will tell the story of being Fed chief during the Perry administration.)

Gordon Brown may be a force of nature and Mervyn King may be a careful thinker, but you wouldn't want to spend a lot of time with either. In these pages you will enjoy spending a couple of hours with Alistair Darling. He seems like a nice guy. And he may have had the best seat in the house for the biggest show of the century so far.

This ambitious but technically unsophisticated first entry in a series features street-wise New Yorker Neal Carey, a 23-year-old graduate student of 18th-century literature. Neal is directed by Friends of the Family, a discreet, private investigation agency for which he works, to find Allie Chase, the teenage, drug-addicted daughter of a U.S. senator and presidential hopeful. Allie is somewhere in England and must be returned to the States before the Democratic Convention nine weeks away. Neal finds Allie but is forced to use his cunning to bring her home; at the same time he suspects someone from the agency is trying to kill him. Winslow guides us on a tour of punk 1976 London and introduces some colorful characters. But this first novel loses much of its punch because Winslow overloads beginning chapters with his hero's personal history rather than pacing the plot with relevant details. Neal is a distant hero whose escapades seem artificially linked.

This is a brisk, immensely enjoyable updating of the private eye and noir genres. When we first meet Neal Carey he's a graduate student at Columbia, working on a degree in 18th Century English Literature. But then he receives a call from his "Dad," Joe Graham, who turns out to be the one-armed dwarf who sort of adopted Neal when he was eleven years old and running the streets. A series of flashbacks shows Graham teaching Neal how to survive and grooming him for an eventual position trouble shooting for a shadowy organization called Friends of the Family, who look after the interests of the wealthy clients of the Kitteridge family bank in Providence, RI. Over the years, Neal learned everything from how to tail people to how to search a room without anyone ever knowing, and in the course of these unusual studies, Joe realized that Neal was a gifted student. Eventually the Friends send him to school, but now they need him for a special assignment.
It's 1976 and with Jimmy Carter likely to win the Democratic presidential nomination, he's expected to look for a northern running mate. Add in a priceless first edition of Tobias Smollett's The Adventures of Peregrine Pickle and a double-crosser within the Friends and you've got a mystery that cleverly mixes elements of classic noir with various innovations of the author's own. Imagine Oliver Twist by way of Raymond Chandler with a soundtrack by The Clash, and you'll capture something of the spirit of the story. It all makes for great fun and I look forward to reading the subsequent books in the series.

A Must Must Must Read!

This is a fabulous book, introducing the reader to fascinating characters (Neal Carey, Joe Graham, etc). As the first in a series of Neal Carey mysteries, this is the perfect book to drag you in and hook you, leaving you wanting more. The story is fascinating, and the driving plot makes this a page-turner. And how can you not fall in love with these charatcters?This is one of the best detective mysteries I've read, and I reccommend it to ALL my friends. READ IT!

How can a first book be this good?

Don Winslow's debut novel is scary good. The writing is completely self-assured. The comedic moments and sarcasm are well constructed. And he has created an interesting and hugely appealing main character for a series, and surrounded him with several interesting back plots and secondary characters.

This is a book that will teach you a lot. You'll learn things you didn't know about 18th century English literature, how to tail someone and not get caught, the best way to score drugs in London, and the finer points of picking a load for a shotgun. It will also show you that Don Winslow is a master at scattering gems like that through a book with a fast moving plot, richly drawn characters, and a very good sense of place.

I've read several other books by Winslow. I especially liked The Winter of Frankie Machine, California Fire and Life, and The Power of the Dog. I backtracked my way into the Neal Carey series and was amazed to find that his debut novel is as good as any of his best works.

I don't know how someone comes out of the starting gate with such a well-written first effort, but Winslow has done it. Bravo. I recommend this highly.

Again, the saga of the crew of the Terran kept me spellbound in the book. Before I wiped out my eyes, I was finished and now I have to wait for the next book (hopefully very soon) and I am very curious about what is going to happen now after that shocking ending. Cant wait for the new book to continue in the adventures of the Terran crew.

The flow of this story keeps reading with anticipation. They are so well written you are caught in the storyline. Cannot wait for the next book.

I never pay this much for a Kindle ebook but I have paid and read all of the Terran books. I've never read a book with so much "gulping" ! The word got to be a little annoying lately. Other than that, 5 stars!!

About the Author
Michael B. Druxman is a veteran Hollywood screenwriter.  His credits include CHEYENNE WARRIOR with Kelly Preston; DILLINGER AND CAPONE starring Martin Sheen and F. Murray Abraham; and THE DOORWAY with Roy Scheider, which he also directed.

He is also a playwright.   His one-person play, JOLSON has had many productions around the country.  Other stage credits include one-person plays about Clark Gable, Carole Lombard, Spencer Tracy and Orson Welles.

Mr. Druxman is the author of 15 other books, including nonfiction works about Hollywood, its movies, and the people who make them (e.g., PAUL MUNI: His Life and His Films, MAKE IT AGAIN, SAM: A Survey of Movie Remakes, MERV [Griffin] and THE MUSICAL: From Broadway to Hollywood).

He has written 2 novels, NOBODY DROWNS IN MINERAL LAKE and SHADOW WATCHER, plus the humorous revisionist history, ONCE UPON A TIME IN HOLLYWOOD: From the Secret Files of Harry Pennypacker, and a book of short stories, DRACULA MEETS JACK THE RIPPER & Other Revisionist Histories.

An acknowledged Hollywood historian, he has also written documentaries and has been interviewed for various retrospective featurettes that have accompanied DVD releases of classic films (e.g. THE MALTESE FALCON). Mr. Druxman is a former Hollywood publicist of 35 years experience who has represented many film and TV stars, as well as noted directors, producers and composers.

He has taught dramatic writing and film appreciation courses in an adult university and is the author of How to Write a Story...Any Story: THE ART OF STORYTELLING, which has been used as a college text.

A native of Seattle who graduated from Garfield High School and the University of Washington, Mr. Druxman moved with his wife, Sandy, from Los Angeles to Austin, TX in 2009.

His memoir, MY FORTY-FIVE YEARS IN HOLLYWOOD AND HOW I ESCAPED ALIVE, was published in 2010.

Good Bio and Detailed Movie-by-Movie Filmography

Even today, for many people Basil Rathbone remains the quintessential Sherlock Holmes, a role which led to the typecasting of the English actor despite the variety of great roles he performed through the years. A couple producers were discussing the idea of making a series of Sherlock Holmes movies. One of them observed that Basil Rathbone was perfect for the role. Rathbone himself even noticed a resemblance to Arthur Conan Doyle's creation. Universal proceeded to film two Holmes movies but then lost interest. Luckily, the series was again picked up and a bunch more Sherlock Holmes movies were turned out, updated with modern settings and a string of Holmes plots, drawing lightly on Doyle's original tales.

Rathbone also played other characters, shining as villains like the French pirate captain in Captain Blood, Guy of Gisbourne in The Adventures of Robin Hood, and as the villainous captain in Mark of Zorro, which ended with fencing enthusiast Rathbone squaring off against Tyrone Power, son of the Ohio state women's fencing champ for a duel to the death that remains among the best movie sword fights ever.

The book consists of a workmanlike biography of fewer than 100 pages and an extensive film-by-film listing of Rathbone's credits. It is heavily illustrated, including the filmography which features the title, cast, comments, and plot, with a critic's comment to bring up the rear.

The biography does contain a few interesting comments such as the one about how Rathbone and Nigel Bruce would make faces at each other during Sherlock Holmes radio broadcasts during long monologues. There is also some comment about Rathbone's extravagantly themed Hollywood parties and his enjoyment of his one-man shows at various colleges where he always noted that he could've taken Errol Flynn easily in the duel between Robin and Guy.

However, an excellent reference book for film buffs.

The Best book about a favorite actor

Michael B. Druxman (and the people at BearManor Media) should be congratulated for making this fine book available again after so many years.
I remember purchasing the original hardcover edition in 1976 in a Sydney bookshop, loaning it to a friend who misplaced it when moving house, so it is great to have this softcover edition back in my collection.
A ggod look at such a marvellous actor, his life and his films.
Mr Rathbone even comes across as a likeable person off stage.
This book goes into more detail about his film work than even Mr Rathbone himself did in his equally enjoyable autobiography 'In and Out of Character'.
A very readable and enjoyable book. Recommended.

Great Biography and filmography!

If you are a Basil Rathbone fan, this is the book for you. Great tidbits on
each movie he was in--simply incredible how many he made besides the Sherlock
Holmes series. He was quite the evil villian in many of them (Robin Hood for
example). He did not do an autobiography and I did not see a biography that I
liked, this was just perfect!

About the Author
Joel Watson is Professor of Economics at the University of California, San Diego. He received his BA from UCSD and his PhD from Stanford. Watson is one of the top game theorists of his generation, and his work has been published in a variety of leading journals, including The American Economic Review, Econometrica, Journal of Economic Theory, Quarterly Journal of Economics, and Games and Economic Behavior.

Witty and clear

As far as economics textbooks go, this one is very readable. Its treatment of the subject is clear and reasonably rigorous on the undergraduate level. The author is also quite witty.

Disappointing

I bought this book because it was the required text for the Open Yale Course on Game Theory. I did not think it was well written and is not easy to follow. Chapter 3's Terminology and Notation section is especially bad. The organization of the book's chapters don't seem to have any rhyme or reason, with some chapters being only two pages long. This came as a surprise to me after reading the reviews for this book. There are no answers in the book for the exercises so you can't be sure if you have correctly understood the lesson. They said that guided exercises were added, but they are really part of the lesson and there is no way you can practice or test yourself with the single guided exercise. What is most glaring is that the book doesn't even mention Evolutionary Stable Strategies. How can a text on Strategy ignore that completely? The only saving grace is that the examples are more realistic than the Open Yale Course, but who cares as long as you learn the lesson. I would not have bought the book and would have stuck with the Open Yale videos alone if I had known.

Great and easy to follow

I found this book well worth my money. It's quite accessible and has great examples. I like the guided problem sets. I just wish the exercises had an answer key. They're great practice.
